This issue is rather short as it included a separate book that's all writing from South Sudan. I wish I could say I remembered the pieces within this issue but ten years on, nothing here has stayed with me. I'm sure I enjoyed it at the time. The cover design is wonderful: two foldout landscape illustrations with telescoping cutouts that give a 3D impression. ( ) McSweeney's 43 is comprised of two slim volumes, both well-designed as usual. The first is a perfectly good, standard McSweeney's issue, with letters, a few short stories (including T.C. Boyle's "Burning Bright," which I quite liked), an essay by Noor Elashi, and some fascinating longform reporting by William Wheeler on the Libyan Revolution. The second volume, "There is a Country," is the first anthology of fiction from the new nation of South Sudan, and contains seven short stories and a poem by writers originally from the region, ably introduced by Nyuol Lueth Tong. Each issue of the quarterly is completely redesigned. There have been hardcovers and paperbacks, an issue with two spines, an issue with a magnetic binding, an issue that looked like a bundle of junk mail, and an issue that looked like a sweaty human head. McSweeney’s has won multiple literary awards, including two National Magazine Awards for fiction, and has had numerous stories appear in The Best American Magazine Writing, the O. Henry Awards anthologies, and The Best American Short Stories. Design awards given to the quarterly include the AIGA 50 Books Award, the AIGA 365 Illustration Award, and the Print Design Regional Award. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
