A great collection of great short stores. They really do run the gamut of modern SciFi/Fantasy and they're almost all good. So good in fact I almost want to go out and buy a copy to lend to people. If you're thinking about reading it, definitely give it a chance and even movie it up your list. It's collections like these (and Pump Six) that really make me love short stories. ( )

Rogues is an excellent collection of cross-genre short stories edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois with a common them of lovable rogues.

I find most short story collections to be hit or miss, but this was mostly hit with some of my favorite authors. And I also enjoyed what Martin is attempting with this collection--in the foreword he talks about going to the drugstore and finding the spinner rack of paperbacks which contained high and low brow fiction, noir, sci-fi and fantasy and he read them all. This collection is just that--some fantasy, some noir, and lots of award winning authors.

Neil Gaimann, Gillian Flynn and one of my favorite authors who more should read--Connie Wills. I am adding a few of the other authors to my wishlist. For Game of Thrones fans you won't want to miss Martin's edition to the list of short stories. ( )

~ What Do You Do? (AKA The Grownup) by Gillian Flynn 4* - I liked how you think you know who is in control but it switches a couple/few times between each main character.

~ Roaring Twenties by Carrie Vaughn 3* - Urban Fantasy. Pointless. Invisible bar. 2 MCs go there and OH SOMETHING MAJOR IS GONNA HAPPEN!!! but they are powerful witches and they can save themselves. The MCs meet with bar own to try to team up but she says she doesn't need them. Feds discover bar (the major thing). A lot of "See I told you so's". Everybody goes about their merry way.

~ A Year and a Day in Old Theradane by Scott Lynch DNF

~ Heavy Metal by Cherie Preist DNF

~ A Cargo of Ivories by Garth Nix 3*

~ The Caravan to Nowhere by Phyllis Eisenstein 3*

~ The Curious Affair of the Dead Wives by Lisa Tuttle 3*

~ Now Showing by Connie Willis 5* loved it

~ The Lightning Tree by Patrick Rothfuss 4* It takes place prior to the opening of The Name of the Wind and follows Bast around for a day (third person). Bast is a busy guy. This is one day of Bast's life. He sells/trades/does favors for secrets/riddles/tasks to be done. I think everything he traded for that day, he used that day. Such a long winded writer but enjoyable. Your in the story to hear the story not to find out what happened. Hard to describe.

~The Rogue Prince (aka A King's Brother) by George R.R. Martin 3* A Song of Fire and Ice story

Skipped:
~ Tough Times All Over by Joe Abercrombie
~ The Inn of the Seven Blessings by Matthew Hughes
~ Bent Twig by Joe R. Lansdale
~ Tawny Petticoats by Michael Swanwick
~ Provenance by David W. Ball
~ Bad Brass by Bradley Denton
~ The Meaning of Love by Daniel Abraham
~ A Better Way to Die by Paul Cornell
~ Ill Seen in Tyre by Steven Saylor
~ A Cargo of Ivories by Garth Nix
~ Diamonds From Tequila by Walter Jon Williams
~ How the Marquis Got His Coat Back by Neil Gaiman ( )

A fun collection! The "rogue" theme was usually interpreted pretty traditionally, but with some fun surprises. Patrick Rothfuss's story was great; GRRM's was a little disappointing. More heraldry and family tree notes than actual plot, I felt.

Still, well worth a read. ( )

EVERYBODY LOVES A ROGUE (by George R. R. Martin)

… though sometimes we live to regret it.

Scoundrels, con men, and scalawags. Ne’er-do-wells, thieves, cheats, and rascals. Bad boys and bad girls. Swindlers, seducers, deceivers, flimflam men, imposters, frauds, fakes, liars, cads, tricksters … they go by many names, and they turn up in stories of all sorts, in every genre under the sun, in myth and legend … and, oh, everywhere in history as well. They are the children of Loki, the brothers of Coyote. Sometimes they are heroes. Sometimes they are villains. More often they are something in between, grey characters … and grey has long been my favorite color. It is so much more interesting than black or white.
