The mystery this time around is started in the setting of a baseball game at the ballpark of the home team with enjoyment, excitement among friends, family, Nick who is running for Senator, his wife Lt. Sam Holland of the FBI and their adopted son Scotty. The organizing of scenes and well developed characters gave the reader an unpredictable mystery to follow to the end. The air is full of excitement as the chances of the home team winning and being in the World Series are looking good. The game was the last inning with the closer (pitcher) of the home team only needing three outs to finish the game. The pitcher finally get two outs and the people in the stands are yelling and hooting for that last out…..down to two strikes, two outs the pitcher throws a fast ball and the hitter smashes a fly ball to an outfielder who steps back, looks away for a second and misjudges the ball….The only thing left now is the audience throwing trash on the field and a stampede of people trying to leave the park before it erupts into a riot… The aftermath left plenty of situations, action and murder for Lt. Sam Holland to investigate with an old colleague FBI Agent Avery Hill sent to her division to help because of the high profile of the case. Nick always gets jealous when Avery Hill is around Sam because Hill was and still is smitten with Sam. The case involves and starts with the first murder, a professional outfielder of the home team, being found in a dumpster in the shady part of the city. It remains to be seen but the reader is led to believe it was either a fan or team member that had very low sportsmanship. Really, who else could it be….? In the meantime we had romance blooming, political alliance in the works, and family problems to resolve. There were many suspects to consider, other paths to follow such as the King Pin Mafia when another murder takes place in a shady motel setting which also led LT. Sam to come upon a child sex ring at the same motel involving forty children from the age of seven to seventeen. The person murdered was the missing closer of the ballgame. So, now we know someone was angry with both the outfielder and the pitcher. I wonder if the murders were for the same reason or maybe we have two suspects…! Interesting story but I was left with questions. First is the situation with Scotty. Nick and Sam adopted him and he was suppose to be their main focus but why was Scotty always with his body guards or their good friend Shelby…? Another question that was left unanswered was what made the outfielder in the game take his eyes of the ball for a second…? Plus, why was the issue of Nick’s career vs. Sam’s career left untouched especially when Nick got a great offer in politics but refused and left Sam not knowing…? This latest book is filled with different story lines while also connecting the past, present and future to the mix…..A fast read with many topics. This is another good addition to the Fatal series. Often by this point in a lengthy series, I start to lose interest in the characters, feel their story has been told, or just plain get sick of the author's writing, but Force has managed to create a series of books that have held the interest of this reader throughout. I look forward to the next book in the series. ( )
