Getting a look into Gin's past as the Spider was all well and good, but forcing all these past connections with the other characters was just not needed. I mean, why did Gin have to unknowingly cross paths with her future love interest (again) as well as her younger sister whom she presumed was dead? Why did Xavier and Roslyn have to be involved? And didn't Gin distinctly say in Widow's Web that her relationship with Owen was the first where she had opened herself up and put her heart on the line, and she had assumed it was the same for him? All around, this book was just unnecessary. ( ) I put off reading this book for the longest time because I am not a big fan of books that go back in time (i.e. prequels that come out after the series has started). But I really like this series, so I knew I needed to read it so I could continue on. And I was pleasantly surprised! It was really nice to have Fletcher back in the picture - I had forgotten how much I liked the father figure relationship between he and Gin. Finn was great as ever, and it was cool to see where a few characters got their first meeting with our main characters (Roslyn, Xavier, Bria and even Owen!). The plot was good, if a little predictable. The reader will likely see the bad guy all along, but it was the most willfully blind that we have seen Gin. Though this helped show that Gin is human and her emotions are involved, she is not just a cold-blooded assassin. Your heart went out to her when she realizes the truth, and the setback prevented her from trusting anyone again for such a long time. I really enjoyed the first meeting between her and Owen. I can't remember if that has been mentioned before in the series. And the ending really goes to show how much heart Gin has, and how much she cares about those people who have crossed her path and meant something in her life. 4 stars / 2 flames. Actual Rating: 3.5/5 stars Seriously. Why did I decide to read this series continuously? I think my interest is a little bit waning. Anything that is too much is just not good for you. I liked this book nonetheless. I don't think I haven't said everything I want to say about Gin in my past reviews on this series. I liked her personality as a heroine, not the type who's perfect but just admirable. So this book is sort of a prequel where we saw something from Gin's past. Well, now I knew why she have trust issues. That was certainly heartbreaking, being used like that. I salute Gin for being a strong woman now despite of that experience. The problem I have is I shouldn't have read this series straight! There should've been a book in between or other things to read because I think I just reached my maximum level of satisfaction for this series. Lol. That was inspired by my Economics subject. *sigh* Anyway, I'll still be reading this series. Hopefully something awesome and amazing would happen that would refresh my interest again. This series is recommended to those who enjoy the Urban Fantasy genre! Actual Rating: 3.5/5 stars Seriously. Why did I decide to read this series continuously? Gehört zur ReiheElemental Assassin (10)
"How did I end up in a career where I always have blood on my hands? Well, let me tell you a story about an assassin who thought she could do no wrong. . . . Ten years ago. A blistering hot August night. I remember like it was yesterday. The night I, Gin Blanco, truly became the Spider. Killing people is what I do best, especially now that I've honed my Ice and Stone magic. But back then, I had yet to learn one very important rule: arrogance will get you, every single time. This particular job seemed simple: murder a crooked building contractor with ties to ruthless Fire elemental Mab Monroe. My mentor, Fletcher Lane, had some misgivings, but I was certain that I had the situation under control . . . right up until I exposed my weaknesses to a merciless opponent who exploited every single one of them. There's a reason assassins aren't supposed to feel anything. Luckily, a knife to the heart can fix that problem, especially when I'm the one wielding it. . . ."--Page 4 of cover.
