The new Confederacy, facing into the Union cannon, had too much on its hands to send troops to the Texas frontier to hold back the Indians. Instead, it authorized the State of Texas to raise its own troops. Many kinds of men drifted into the Texas Mounted Rifles. Some thought it might be safer than fighting in far off Virginia. Many were merely young men a-thirst for adventure. Some were settlers who saw this as the best way to protect their families and homes against the murderous thrusts of the Comanche. Like many Tejanos who did not want to fight against the Union in the Civil War, Sam Houston Cloud decides to join the Texas Mounted Rifles, a company of Indian fighters. As the company is composed of Unionists, Pacifists, and Confederate sympathizers, readers of Civil War fiction will discover an unusual perspective of the era. (Texas history buffs will also be fascinated.) When Sam falls in love with a white woman who was abducted and raised by Indians, he finds himself in the middle of a different moral crisis with its roots in accepted, if not acceptable, racism. Although the romance is a minor plot element, it helps drive and justify the action. Because the romance is proper and courtly, the story might appeal to Christian Fiction Romance readers. Overall, Kelton has written a western that can be enjoyed on many levels.
