In this quartet of mesmerizing stories, Marcos Giralt Torrente explores the confounding, double-edged promise of love. Each finds a man carefully churning over his past, trying to fathom how the distance between people can become suddenly unbridgeable. Two tourists visit a remote island off the coast of Africa and are undone by a disconcerting encounter with another couple. A young man, enchanted by his bohemian cousin and her husband, watches them fall into a state of resentful dependence over the course of decades. A chaste but all-consuming love affair between a troubled boy and a wealthy but equally troubled girl leaves a scar that never heals. The son of divorced parents tries in vain to reunite them before realizing why he is wrong to do so. In The End of Love, Giralt Torrente forges discomfiting and gripping dramas from the small but consequential misunderstandings that shape our lives.… (mehr)

I really wanted to like The End of Love. It has a great premise: four stories tackling love in all its different forms and points of view. We have a young, married couple, young, adolescent love, parental love, and the love between friends or platonic love. That is an ambitious set to explore in a short story collection. But the book never quite comes together, and the collection left me cold and numb at the end. The tragic, bittersweet tone that weaves throughout the four stories falls flat and is tiresome. I think perhaps it might be a problem with the translation; the language feels wooden and contrived. A disappointment from McSweeneys, which publishes great fiction. You won't find any great insights into love or life here. For that, I would read Love, Etc. (check out my LibraryThing review here) or Sense of An Ending by Julian Barnes or anything by Ian McEwan. an interesting collection of 4 novellas. most depict distant memories of an adolescent, events that were sure to influence his own future journey through life.

there is a sense of not quite belonging, of seperation, yearning that permeates these tales. They remind me of earlier writers from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century- Elias Canetti, Robert Walser; writers who mine the interior life of their characters.

i am drawn to these kind of tales. Torrente is a most interesting writer.

in addition, as a book lover, i appreciated the quality of the production of this book: McSweeney's took time and effort, the pages are woven together, the cover is simple and sturdy, this is a book that would last several decades as if new on one's bookshelf. ( )
