Excerpt from A Primary History of the United States Before the white man came the Indians had dogs, but no sheep, horses, or cattle. They used no tools of iron or steel. They lived in clans that were made up of all the families descended from a common female ancestor. A number of clans formed a tribe. A symbol, or totem, such as a wolf or a bear, was the mark of the clan, and its members believed that the spirit of the animal chosen as the totem watched over them. The Indians had a belief in a number of mysterious spirits called manitos, 1 which they feared or venerated. They had, however, no belief in a single Great Spirit or Supreme Deity.
