The writing is serious and straight forward of being on the ship and how Indians helped the settlers farm. 2nd and up ( ) This book is an account of the mayflower journey through the eyes of a young boy. He talks about their parting from their homeland, the journey itself including what it was like on the ship and the storms they went through. He describes the first sighting of land and everyone getting off of the ship. They then began building their settlement but faced many hardships. In the end they made it through with the help of the native indians. This was a very descriptive account of what a child went through on the mayflower and would be great to help students visualize during a lesson on the colonies or pilgrimage. Classroom extensions: - A lesson over the pilgrimage and colonies during the week of thanksgiving including this book. - A reenactment of the thanksgiving dinner between the pilgrims and Indians, also discussing their relationship.
