This was my second venture into the Aunty Lee series, an enjoyable, not overly complex cosy. It gives good background for the later novel that I had already read. Apart from the murder mystery there is interesting commentary on life in Singapore. In style it reminded me just a little of Alexander McCall Smith's No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series.

My book group have suggested I also try the Crown Colony series.

I have been reading more cozy mysteries lately and am particularly intrigued by those set in less familiar environs or peopled with less common characters. Ovidia Yu's Aunty Lee's Delights, set in Singapore, populated with characters from many different nationalities, and with an older, female, amateur sleuth fits that bill all the way around.

Rosie "Aunty" Lee is a wealthy widow. She keeps busy by running a cafe serving delicious homemade food during the day. On occasion, she will open the cafe for a wine dinner, cooking her "delights" and leaving the wine portion of the evening to be run by her stepson Mark and his wife Selina, called Silly-Nah by Aunty. As the story opens, newly weds discover an unidentified woman's body on the beach on Sentosa Island. Aunty Lee is intrigued by the murder and very curious about the identity of the woman. What she doesn't know, is just how close to home the investigation will hit. At the wine dinner that night, two women are missing: a friend of Selina's who had promised to help out with the evening and a young woman who is a family friend's daughter. Another young woman interrupts the evening looking for Selina's friend and desperately afraid that the unidentified body is that of the woman she's come to Singapore to see, the Lee's family friend's daughter. Aunty is determined to find out the fate of the two missing women and to uncover the secrets her wine dinner guests are clearly hiding. She doesn't obstruct the police but rather assists them when she can, using her own instincts and the connections her Filipino maid Nina has.

The mystery is culinarily rich and the glimpses into Singapore food and culture that Yu offers the reader are enticing. Her Aunty Lee is nosy but smart, a busybody with heart. She is both loyal and astute. Perhaps because this is the first in a series, there are a lot of characters introduced, most of whom have the potential to be returning characters. They, the secondary characters, are less fully fleshed out though, perhaps with the exception of Nina, and lean a little to the stereotypical side. The mystery here is not so much in who the woman is but more in the motivation for killing her (and who the killer is, of course). The plot overall is a bit choppy and the coincidence in the end is a bit much but the book is generally appealing so it's forgivable. What is a bit harder to forgive is the uneven pacing, with the story being drawn out only to find a quick and easy wrap-up with a somewhat muddled denouement in the end. Pleasing enough as a way to spend a couple of hours, this won't set the world on fire but for anyone searching, like I was, for a different culture and different characters this might fit the bill. This is a cultural as well as a culinary view of Singapore, cultural in the sense of the people and their attitudes.
Aunty Lee has opened an eatery known as Aunty Lee's Delights following the death of her husband.
She understands people by the way they eat and she applies this to solving the murders that comes her way and in dealing with relationships. These include her stepson Mark and his wife Selina, who's name Aunty Lee pronounces as "Silly-Nah", her maid Nina and Senior Staff Sergeant Salim. A box of food always accompanies her visits to gather information.
This story does not shy away from the social mores of the place, in this instance, the attitudes to same sex relationships and 'treatment'. The author, and Aunty Lee, handle it well.
An interesting and enjoyable cozy mystery. I've already downloaded the next in the series from my local library's ebook collection. ( )

I know I shouldn't have, but I came across this series of cozy mysteries and was drawn in by the gorgeous covers (really, look up the other entries in the series). Thus far my cozy mysteries have centered around books/reading so it seemed like I should branch out and widen my experiences in the genre.

Aunty Lee seems to be one of those stereotypical old ladies with a little too much time on her hands and a mystery to solve. A dead body washes up on the beach the same night a guest goes missing! Oh no! Time to get cracking since Aunty Lee is no "tai tai" (rich old lady who spends her time shopping and playing mah-jong).

It was interesting in that it was set in Singapore (another reason why I was drawn to this series). So it was interesting (for me) to read up a bit on the food, culture, society, etc. However, the book was slow. It seemed like she was doing a lot of set up (the characters, the mystery, Singaporean society/culture/food/atmosphere, etc.). Maybe it was because it's the first book but I was hoping things would move along much faster.

Some of it was also a bit clunky. I realize I am reading this in the US and would have a Western POV but there are stereotypes and tropes that made me pause and side-eye. Initially it seemed best to hold my thoughts and perhaps put it down to cultural differences/first in a series, etc. But from other reviews that show that yeah, unfortunately there is a bit of stereotyping and falling into well-worn tropes.

I think I'll give this series another shot. I also bought another book in the series at bargain price anyway. Borrow this if possible. I wouldn't rush out to buy it. ( )

AUNTY LEE’S DELIGHTS is the first in what is to date a four book series of cosy style mysteries set in Yu’s native Singapore. The eponymous character, ‘Aunty’ Rosie Lee, is a wealthy widow who runs a restaurant known for its wonderful home-style cooking. Here she is hosting a series of banquets for her stepson’s latest business venture, a high-end wine club, when one of the regulars is found dead nearby.

For those who love travelling virtually via fiction there’s lots to enjoy about this book. Not only is it full of Aunty Lee’s divine-sounding food but there’s lots of local flavour in terms of language, behaviour and social commentary. Characters are a mix of ethnic Chinese, Indians, Malays and Filipinos as well as tourists from several countries which adds a realistic element to the story.

As far as the story itself goes I found AUNTY LEE’S DELIGHTS a bit patchy. I liked the overall mystery and its resolution, including its inclusion of an element that is both topical and quite specific to the location (I know that sounds almost pointlessly vague but I don’t want to give away too much). But a lot of this story hinges on how much the reader engages with Aunty Lee and I’m afraid I was a bit put off by the fact that she ticks every one of the boxes for this type of cosy mystery heroine (she is in the vein of Alexander McCall Smith’s Precious Ramotswe, though in my thinking not as successful a creation). While some of the minor characters in the book were quite nuanced and believable in the end Aunty Lee was for me over-the-top busy body type who didn’t always ring true.

Overall though the book was enjoyable enough for me to happily try another one in the series. The evocative setting, gentle humour and interesting array of minor characters provide more than many of the cosy mysteries I’ve cast aside due to their vapid nature.

Contrary to what Selina believed, there was quite enough work for Nina under Aunty Lee's supervision. That morning she had already watered and trimmed the garden, prepared and washed up breakfast, and made the pot of lemongrass-and-ginger tea (from freshly harvested lemongrass) and was currently employed in tailing mung-bean sprouts or tow gay. Because Aunty Lee insisted on sprouting her own green beans, this was slightly more complicated. Rather than the uniformly slim straight sprouts you could find in the market or supermarket, her sprouts were twisted and contorted. But they were also lusciously plump and juicy. "Like women," Aunty Lee said. "The skinny ones all no taste." (p. 77)
As far as Aunty Lee was concerned, people ought to go through the ideas they carried around in their heads as regularly as they turned out their store cupboards. No matter how wisely you shopped, there would be things in the depths that were past their expiration dates or gone damp and moldy -- or that had been picked up on impulse and were no longer relevant. Aunty Lee believed everything inside a head or cupboard could affect everything else in it by going bad or just taking up more space than it was worth.
