( ) This translation (portuguese to japanese)of Frois's 1585 Tratado is the most readable version of the two pocket bk versions available in japanese and Okada deserves praise for putting his explanations next to the original distiches where they may be easily read rather than in footnotes or page-end notes as scholars tend to do. Because Japanese now know less of their culture than they did in 1965, a new version with more explanation yet, as in my Topsy-turvy 1585 may soon be necessary for Japanese, too! My whole book is a reading of Frois's Tratado, so I give no more information here! See the list of 611 items at paraverse.org if you wish or read inside the book at Amazon for more. A good translation of Frois's treatise listing 611 ways Europeans and Japanese are contrary in 1585, with little explanation, and that in separate chapters. For this reason, Okada's version is a far better read for the layman. However, historical research on the tract and some of the examination of the veracity of Frois's claims are well done, so a scholar might prefer this. In 1585, at the height of Jesuit missionary activity in Japan, which was begun by Francis Xavier in 1549, Luis Frois, a long-time missionary in Japan, drafted the earliest systematic comparison of Western and Japanese cultures. This book constitutes the first critical English-language edition of the 1585 work, the original of which was discovered in the Royal Academy of History in Madrid after the Second World War. The book provides a translation of the text, which is not a continuous narrative, but rather more than 600 distichs or brief couplets on subjects such as gender, child rearing, religion, medicine, eating, horses, writing, ships and seafaring, architecture, and music and drama. In addition, the book includes a substantive introduction and other editorial material to explain the background and also to make comparisons with present-day Japanese life. Overall, the book represents an important primary source for understanding a particularly challenging period of history and its connection to contemporary Europe and Japan.
