In reviewing this book for use in a high school U.S. history classroom, I would recommend it as a supplementary resource. It is a relatively fast read but includes first person accounts and a wealth of photos. What makes this book particularly useful is that it provides a comprehensive summary of what led up to the internment of Japanese Americans. Students will discover that, while the bombing of Pearl Harbor may have been the catalyst for interning this population of American citizens, anti-Asian sentiment had been in place long before December 1941. This book is engaging for both reluctant readers and visual learners. ( )

Japanese American internment, the forced relocation by the U.S. government of thousands of Japanese Americans to detention camps during World War II. That action was the culmination of the federal government’s long history of racist and discriminatory treatment of Asian immigrants and their descendants that had begun with restrictive immigration policies in the late 1800s. This book examines the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. Sandler explores the historical, military, social and political issues surrounding this civil rights violation. This book was very interesting and informative. The pictures from this time period add to the words being described in the text. This work taught me some things regarding this topic of Japanese Internment that I had not known before. ( )

Martin Sandler wrote and illustrated Imprisoned: The Betrayal of Japanese Americans during World War II. This book should be required to read so people can understand how a group of minorities were treated in the United States during World War II. This book is ideal for students in sixth grade. This book gives a great portrayal of the events that happened during this time. ( )

This is a long book that I would only use with older kids and even though it is classified as a children's book, I do not see that as much. It does a great job depicting what happens when suspicion of others different from us can do. This might be a good race equality type of book in the classroom. Genre, informational, as it tells about WWII and the Japanese Americans. Media, penciling. ( )
