The only person living there, except for Bertie but he hardly counts, was Antonia and she's hardly a long-term resident. So that was a shame. Dominica living with the pirates was also pretty weird: I feel McCall Smith wrote himself into a corner with that one. Maybe it would've been better just to skip that entire year and start when she got back again? I don't really know. I'm not sold on Pat getting together with whine master Matthew either. I was hoping they'd both find someone better suited for them, but oh well... And once again, it was difficult to put down, largely due to each chapter so naturally flowing one to the next. Overall, a good read, one that provides additional insight into life at 44 Scotland Street. I look forward to the next. I find the eccentric characters in this series charming - I especially like Bertie, the precocious 6 year old with the awful mother. The books are like a quirky soap opera - once you become involved with the various people, what happens is extremely interesting. And like a soap opera, some very extraordinary things do occur but are taken in stride...
