Simon Anders, troubled BPRD agent haunted by the ominous vampire sisters decides to leave BPRD and make a move against the vampires themselves.

This is a revenge story where man uses his newly acquired powers (that basically condemn him to vampire existence) against the forces that made him what he is now.

To me this volume looks like only part of the story - vampires are truly afraid of Simon and they try to stop him but after killing off the vampires in the witch town I am not clear whether vampire extermination is something witches want or not.

Added short story (Lost Ones) shows Simon as a wanderer of sorts, fighting evil and on a quest (we are left in the dark what exactly is he looking for). I have to admit that in this story he reminded me of Elric of Melnibone.

Art as always is excellent. Cannot wait to see how this story arc ties up in the end. ( )

Though I liked some of the artwork, most of it didn't work for me. Neither did the story. I'm a fan of Hellboy but apparently I don't enjoy BPRD titles without him. Not for me, though fans of BPRD will most likely enjoy it.

On story alone, this would get three stars, because it's not a terribly fresh one, but it was drawn by Moon & Bá, so ALL THE STARS ALWAYS. ( )

I got this as an ARC from Netgalley.

What do I say about this book? What can I say? That I can't tell you what I like the most, because it keeps changing? The writing, the art - the penciling, the inking, the colors- are equally amazing.

This story takes place in the past, when Hellboy is a child. 1948, to be specific, so four years after Professor Bruttenholm took Hellboy in.

However, the story has very little to do with Bruttenholm, and even less to do with Hellboy. When Bruttenholm is brought it, it's only to show the consequences of his actions, and how it now affects agent Simon Anders. It's revealed that Anders has some vampires in him. Their souls, their memories, whatever you want to call it. (I haven't read the previous volumes, or not most of them, as I'm more a fan of Hellboy than the B.R.P.D. But B.R.P.D plus vampires? I needed to see this.)

He also seems to have some of their strength, and so he's gotten angry, to the point where he's decided it's safer for him to be away from Bruttenholm and the others at the B.R.P.D. Instead, he chooses to go after the vampires, all the vampires. He and Bruttenholm narrow down where a vampire ceremony to Hecate - alluded to, shown here, and I suspect gone over in more detail in a previous volume - has taken place, and Anders goes there. In the Czech Republic, he meets a woman who shows him around, and fills him in on more of the history of the Czech vampire lore.

However, very little is as it seems. The twists were not ones I was expecting, although given that Mignola had a hand in this, I tend to tone down my expectations of what exactly will happen. MIgnola is a master storyteller, so instead of trying to guess where he will take me, I simply trust him to lead me down an breathtaking, unexpected path. I wasn't disappointed here.

I also failed to look at who the illustrator was before I started reading this. When I did go to double check, I expected it to be Mignola himself. Imagine my surprise when I saw not the name Mike Mignola but Gabriel Ba and Fábio Moon. It looks a lot like Mignola's art. Having seen their notes in the art gallery, I suspect that they were simply very true to his art style. Regardless, they're amazing artists. (I suspect they have their own style, and if this is any indication, an amazing one. However, their homage to Mignola in this was incredible!)

Very, very highly recommended. ( )
