I read this for the "An Author Who Uses Initials" part of my 2019 reading challenge. Most of the book was a solid 3/5, I found the characters a little hard to keep track of and the new terms and language took some getting used to. I love Geology but also had a hard time believing this world, and I was surprised I didn't like it as much as I expected to. The last 1/4 of the book was a 3.5, I liked the surprises and how the story came together. Holy crap that was good! THis book was a labyrinth. A slow, wandering, desperate, sad and exciting look into a dystopia that was truly frightening. I really don't have the words for this one. It was completely unexpected and I just....wow. I consider myself truly lucky to have stumbled on Ms Jemisin. So, so good. I recommend to anyone that loves fantasy. In addition, the narration by Robin Miles was superb. She was perfection. I feel bad rating this one as low as I did, and I'm sure it was more me than anything else. I just couldn't get into this story. The changing perspective really threw me off at the beginning of the book, and I never really recovered.
I felt like the characters were not really strong enough to be identifiable by any narrative, and the book itself is not dialog driven. I found myself reading it but thinking about other things, or other books. I even had to re-read parts of it because I thought I must have missed something, but I didn't.
I guess, for me... it was boring, kind of like Tolkien's Silmarillion. Again, not bad, but not really a page-turner. ( )
