"Brimming with wit, atmosphere, and unforgettable characters, FATAL ENQUIRY reintroduces private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewellyn, and their unforgettable world of Victorian London. Some years ago, Cyrus Barker matched wits with Sebastian Nightwine, an aristocrat and sociopath, and in exposing his evil, sent Nightwine fleeing to hide from justice somewhere in the far corners of the earth. The last thing Barker ever expected was to encounter Nightwine again--but the British government, believing they need Nightwine's help, has granted him immunity for his past crimes, and brought him back to London. Nightwine, however, has more on his mind than redemption--and as Barker and Llewellyn set out to uncover and thwart Nightwine's real scheme, they find themselves in the gravest danger of their lives"--… (mehr)

love a mystery and local author in Oklahoma. This was a bookclub book for March 2018 by Gail Morris. I own this book and will probably let someone borrow or have it. ( )

The 6th installment of the much-loved "Barker and Llewelyn series". The books are mysteries, detective novels set in a time prior to the introduction of the profession of detectives. These men are called "enquiry agents", forensic science is just starting, and the year is 1886.

Thomas writes atmospherically, drenching each page in Victorian settings complete with sabers, hansom cabs, fog-wetted streets, and crackling fires at home in three story brownstone. Many different neighborhoods are presented naturally as the honorable enquiry agnents Barker and his aide Llewelyn chase villains. Thomas' characters are drawn sharply and identifiably. From cigar loving scalawag Soho Vic to diligent Inspector Poole, to the intriguing villains and lovely ladies (who just might be more dangerous than they look) the books are interesting from the first page to the last. Quality of writing has been consistent throughout the series, since the first book, titled "Some Danger Involved". ( )

Continuing adventures, yes, but this book also reveals back story that deeply enriches the reader's relationship with Barker and Llewelyn. I wasn't totally on board with Thomas' casting, so to speak, of the murderer in this enquiry; this character doesn't feel believable to me. However, my overall state of enamor with this series continues. :) ( )

After exposing Sebastian Nitewine a number of years ago, forcing his nemeses arch to flee London,, howeve, Nitewine returns with a pardon from the British Government, who believe Nitewine has valueable information needed for national security . Through his manipulation, Barker is falsely accused of murder and sent on the run. Nitewine also as a bounty placed on Barkers head. With all of London on the lookout for Barker, can he again foil Nitewine? An excellent Victorian mystery. ( )

This is a very good mystery. Twists and turns through out the entire story. ( )
