"Dilbert creator Scott Adams offers his most personal book ever -- a funny memoir of his many failures and what they eventually taught him about success. How do you go from hapless office worker to world-famous cartoonist and bestselling author in just a few years? No career guide can answer that, and not even Scott Adams (who actually did it) can give you a road map that works for everyone. But there's a lot to learn from his personal story, and a lot of humor along the way. In How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Adams admits that he failed at just about everything he's tried, including his corporate career, his inventions, his investments, and his two restaurants. But along the way, Adams discovered some truths you're unlikely to find anywhere else. "--… (mehr)

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life von Scott Adams (2014)

Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives von Gretchen Rubin (Deesirings)
Deesirings: Adams suggest having "systems" rather than goals. Developing good habits appears to be a key system in Adams' approach to success and Rubin's book elaborates on how to do that. These two books therefore complement each other.

Some parts of the book, especially talking about his early career, is quite annoying. He says he is skill-free, but gets promoted and finally fired as he hit the diversity ceiling. I will leave them there.

Two things, I liked from the book:

Goals vs Systems: I understand, a goal, for example means, “reduce 10 kgs in the next six months” but a system will be, “eat healthy food and be strong and fit”. I really liked this concept, as you are living under a constant pressure of failure in a goal based approach, but in a systems based approach you keep learning what are all the healthy foods that you can eat, make the best out of the existing situation and keep improving. The journey to reach your destination in goal based approach can be filled with guilt and near failure, which sucks.

Affirmations: Say to yourself, repeatedly (at least 15 times), everyday on what you want to be and you will become that. This sounds like Alchemist-voodoo crap. Scott is also aware of this. He has mentioned a several disclaimers in his book about this. I find it curious and amusing because, this is what religion does to people in the name of prayers. Psychologists say that this is positive thinking and positive visualization. But it is a nice mechanism to stay optimistic. ( )

No-nonsense, pragmatic, practical self-help book. Debunks some of the myths sorrunding passion vs success. ( )

One of the best books I read in my life. Unprecedented clarity and simplicity in narration. Masterful understanding and explanation of affirmation and energy concept.

This is "How to Win Friends and Influence People" but for 21st century. Outstanding!

Pretty funny and pretty good advice. Well, funny to me anyway. And I guess I like the advice because it comes pretty close to what I think anyway. Not sure anyone else I know would like the book. Maybe Scott wrote it just for me. ( )

Who knew that Scott Adams, after making fun of everything about working for any corporation, had so many serious ideas about work and life. ( )

If you're already as successful as you want to be, both personally and professionally, all you are likely to get from this book is a semientertaining tale about a guy who failed his way to success.
