A readable account, sharing a good deal of inflammation and slant with with the later film "the Bounty". A pretty good set of character studies, and it succeeds in humanizing Bligh. It gets points for that, in my opinion. ( ) Mutiny on the Bounty, the classical story of the harsh captain and his decent mate, who part company in the middle of the Pacific. Great read. Muiterij op de Bounty, het klassieke verhaal van de wrede kapitein en zijn fatsoenlijke stuurman, die midden in de Stille Oceaan uit elkaar gaan. Fantastisch verhaal. 2622 Captain Bligh & Mr. Christian: The Men and the Mutiny, by Richard Hough (read 2 Jul 1994) This 1973 book is excellently researched and well-done. But it is a story without heroes. Hough suggests there may have been an unnatural relationship or feeling between Bligh and Christian. Certainly Bligh's actions are weird: alternating between laxity and idiotic harshness. It is a fascinating story, and shows the ability of people to endure the unendurable. The Bounty set out in 1788 to transport breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies as a cheap source of food for slaves. But the combination of the tough discipline of Bligh and the attractions of life in the South Sea Islands drove Fletcher Christian and part of the crew to mutiny, and Bligh along with those loyal to him were set adrift in the ship's launch. Their remarkable 3,600-mile, open-boat voyage to Timor is one of the great feats of navigation, while the story of the mutineers' discovery of the uninhabited island of Pitcairn and their attempt to fashion a community away from the pursuing ships of the Royal Navy is as tense as it is horrific. This drama of mutiny, courage, remarkable voyages, human deceit and treachery, first published in 1972, provides an account of this episode of maritime history.
