Ten years ago, Izzy Stone's mother fatally shot her father while he slept. Devastated by her mother's apparent insanity, Izzy, now seventeen, refuses to visit her in prison. But her new foster parents, employees at the local museum, have enlisted Izzy's help in cataloguing items at a long-shuttered state asylum. There, amid piles of abandoned belongings, Izzy discovers a stack of unopened letters, a decades-old journal, and a window into her own past. Clara Cartwright, eighteen years old in 1929, is caught between her overbearing parents and her love for an Italian immigrant. Furious when she rejects an arranged marriage, Clara's father sends her to a genteel home for nervous invalids. But when his fortune is lost in the stock market crash, he can no longer afford her care-and Clara is committed to the public asylum. Even as Izzy deals with the challenges of yet another new beginning, Clara's story keeps drawing her into the past. If Clara was never really mentally ill, could something else explain her own mother's violent act? Piecing together Clara's fate compels Izzy to re-examine her own choices-with shocking and unexpected results.… (mehr)

Comment: This was probably a good book but I could not be taken into the world of asylums and cruelty to the mentally ill right now - put my teeth on edge, so after half an hour of listening I moved on. ( )

It took a few tries to finish this book and then the only reason I did is because I had read everything else on my e-reader. The initial story was entertaining but quickly mired itself down in a predictable sort of young adult novel trying to take a serious look at early twentieth-century mental health institutions. It really did seem like two books mashed into one, the modern story feeling flat and without depth, and the one in the past not getting the attention perhaps that would have made for a far better story. So gripping, I couldn't put it down. The best book I've read in so long. ( )

This was a heartily enjoyable piece of YA fiction. I found it hard to put down from about midway and found myself discussing mental health treatment of yore with others while reading it. ( )

An exceptionally written dual timeline novel!
Heartbreaking and suspenseful, this intriguing story spans decades. The vivid details and strong characters pulled me in from page one. And the multi-layered plot veined and twisted keeping me completely engrossed to the end.
The strength and love that drives these women to overcome adversity will have you cheering them on. The events that happen will outrage you. It is not a story for the squeamish. ( )
