In a probing analysis of the oldest Buddhist texts, Julius Evola places the doctrine of liberation in its original context. The early teachings, he suggests, offer the foremost example of an active spirituality that is opposed to the more passive, modern forms of theistic religions. This sophisticated, highly readable analysis of the theory and practice of Buddhist asceticism, first published in Italian in 1943 , elucidates the central truths of the eightfold path and clears away the later accretions of Buddhist doctrine. Evola describes the techniques for conscious liberation from the world of maya and for achieving the state of transcendence beyond dualistic thinking. Most surprisingly, he argues that the widespread belief in reincarnation is not an original Buddhist tenet. Evola presents actual practices of concentration and visualization, and places them in the larger metaphysical context of the Buddhist model of mind and universe. > DU (TROP) LOURD. — Voici un livre très technique sur le bouddhisme originelle. Je n'ai pas les fondements pour m'attaquer à ce genre de livre, j'y ai donc trouver quelques informations très intéressante sur l'origine aryenne du bouddhisme (si toutefois l'auteur voit juste), sur la nature de la réincarnation et de la conscience... mais je pense être passé à coté du livre par manque de culture.
Je suppose que ce livre est exceptionnel mais il est très technique. (Oribase)

> REMARQUABLE, MÊME SI.... — Cet ouvrage de Julius Evola constitue une analyse remarquable du canon bouddhiste pali. Tous ceux voulant s’initier au bouddhisme le plus authentique et en comprendre sa doctrine et son essence auront tout intérêt à se reporter à cet ouvrage dont le style, il faut bien toutefois le signaler, s’avère quelque peu difficile d’accès.
Néanmoins, au-delà des compliments évidents que tout lecteur sérieux ressentira à sa lecture, Julius Evola peut parfois se révéler partisan et fort peu sérieux. Ainsi, ses pages sur la réincarnation ne tiennent pas la route. Prétendre que la doctrine de la réincarnation n’aurait jamais été enseignée en Inde alors qu’elle est explicitement formulée dans la Bhagavad Gîtâ ; et prétendre que, pour le Bouddha, les vies passées seraient simplement une formule pour décrire les étant multiples de l’être montre à quel point un penseur, a priori sérieux, peut affirmer un pieux mensonge des lors que celui-ci l’arrange.
A quelques remarques près, La doctrine de l’Eveil ne manquera pas d’apporter une documentation ô combien précieuse et une très solide introduction à l’ascèse propice à l’Eveil. (Nicolas)
