"Jess Tennant has now been living in a tiny town on the English seaside for three months, and is just beginning to relax and think of it as home after the traumatic events of last summer. But in the small hours of Halloween night, a teenage boy is left for dead by the side of the road. Seb Dawson has a serious head injury and may not survive. Jess might not have liked Seb much, but surely he didn't deserve this. The police don't seem to be taking the attack very seriously, but Jess can't just let it go, and she takes matters into her own hands. As she investigates, Jess discovers that Seb was involved in some very dangerous games. A secret predator around girls, he would do whatever it took to abuse them, from lying and blackmail to spiking drinks. Could a group of vengeful victims be behind his attack? Or is there someone else with a grudge against Seb, who will stop at nothing to silence him? Jane Casey returns with another edge-of-your-seat mystery in Bet Your Life"--… (mehr)

Not quite as good as the first one, too little action and too much romance, but still very good.
The (romance) problems with Dan, Will and her mother are too much and not solved, rather getting more complicated, making me fear for the next book.
The YA-Theme with bullying, pranks and lots of badly behaving teens are spot on and very good.
Highly recommended, but only gets four stars from me. ( )

This is the second in a YA series about sixteen-year-old Jess Tennant, a girl from London who moves with her single mom from London to the small wealthy seaside town of Port Sentinel, where her mom grew up. The two are living with Jess’s mom’s twin Tilly and Tilly’s big, likable family. In the first book in the series (How To Fall, Jess solved the mystery of the apparent suicide of her cousin Freya the year before.

This book begins when a boy from Jess’s high school is left for dead on the street on Halloween night. Sebastian (“Seb”) Dawson was not well liked, and it appears someone was out for revenge. But the police chief, Dan Henderson, is calling it a “hit and run” car accident. Seb’s sister Beth, who is BFF’s with Petra, Jess’s young cousin, asks Jess to help find out who did this to Seb.

Jess protests she is not “Port Sentinel’s answer to Nancy Drew” but both Petra and Beth plead with Jess, and her own conviction that this was no hit and run case also helps persuade her to investigate. But obviously, whoever did this to Seb doesn’t want to be discovered, and soon Jess herself is in great danger.

Evaluation: Jane Casey writes very appealing books. Her intrepid female protagonists have lovely self-deprecating senses of humor, and are brave in almost every aspect of life except that of trusting someone with their hearts. There is good tension and pacing, and the depictions of friendship are as well done as the romantic aspects. ( )

I had just read the first Jess Tennant book last month and was excited to see a sequel soon released. As I really enjoyed "how to fall" I ordered this one as soon as it became available.
This was also a thrilling fast paced mystery. I love Jess and her smart mouth and while there is a lot of mystery going on, there's also the back story of her life. Why does everyone not want her and Will together? From her suddenly appearing father, which is a story all in itself, to Wills parents. There is that whole thing about her mom and Will's dad from so many years ago. I thought maybe Dan was really Jess's father in which case the ick factor would be at play.
Jess is such a strong character, not afraid to take people on, says what she thinks. She hasn't made a lot of friends in her new town, her sometimes abrasive quality doesn't win many admirers. When the sister of someone she bare knows is nearly killed, she digs in to try to find out what really happened. Things don't add up to what had been told and she comes up with a huge suspect pool, the guy was scum, and any of several dozen people wanted him dead and many don't actually care about the truth.
Good, fast paced book. I am looking forward to the next instalment of Jess and will be giving this authors other books a whirl. ( )

When a teenage boy is left for dead by the side of the ride left for dead Jess Tennant is soon on the case to find out the truth.

This is the second book to feature Jess Tennant and her adventures. I do find that Jess is a modern day Nancy Drew and for me that is the appeal. I used to love Nancy Drew books when I was younger so Jess Tennant is a good substitute.

Jane Casey write gritty thrillers with her Mauve Kerrigan books, and her teen books featuring Jess are just as good. The difference being is that the Jess books are not as gritty and are a lighter read. At times it is easy to forget that I was reading a teenage book.

Jess had all the qualities of a normal teenager, family problems, boyfriends problems, and just being a teenager. She can't help herself getting involved in local crimes and running around to solves them.

The book was very easy to read with plenty going on in the story to hold my interest and enough for me to read further book featuring Jess. Jane Casey has done a good job of creating two very different female characters with Jess and Mauve. She has also done a good job of defining the difference between her adult books from her teenage reads. ( )
