This book offers a rare look into the experience of bringing a child OUT of Autism. It can be done. Betsy's Mother entrusts her to a school that believes in having lots of animals around, but Betsy rejects them and just about everything else until, one year into her enrollment at the school, an encounter with the school's resident dove captivates her and inspires her with it's beauty. My first career was working intensely with children with Autism and their families, and this story makes me remember how I had to accept the child's every boundary and rejection, to follow their lead but stay determined to find ways to entice them to interact with me and elicit communication. Families especially need stories like this for support and hope. ( )

The Flight of a Dove is about Besty after she showed many alarming symptoms of autism. She wouldn't speak beside hissing and ticking noses, cried when touch and stood still for hours. Day described Betsy as hard and cold throughout the whole book as she isolated herself from her mother, teachers, and classmates. It wasn't until she saw the beauty in a white dove taking flight did she open up. I think this book made autism sound horrible in the beginning Betsy almost being portrayed as depress but after the dove she improved greatly. ( )

The Flight of a Dove is about Betsy and her struggles in her daily life. At a young age, Betsy suddenly became quiet and did not react well to others round her. She was sent to a school that was only for people with disabilities. Betsy got worse and would make hissing noises if anyone came near her. The school attempted to use animals to help her, but Betsy wouldn't react. Her mother feared going to school made it worse for Betsy and the teachers had given up. One day, a dove flew past Betsy and she followed it. Over time, the dove caused Betsy to smile and move around. Soon she was interacting with others, but she still had never spoken. Some days were worse than others, but most days she improved. Her first word was "Mommy." This book explained in perfect detail what people with autism go through. Betsy had a more severe cause, which i think was good to show as you not often do you read about children with severe autism in children's book. This book didn't sugarcoat autism and made it very realistic. I think this is a fantastic book to children to read to become more informed on autism. ( )

This was a story about a girl with severe autism. The story follows the struggle her mom and teachers went through as she made her way through a special school. While the story may have been realistic, I wasn't a fan of the way that it was told. It was a very sad book that I don't think would be accepted well by younger students. ( )

This book is about a girl with severe autism. It is the story of her journey through a year of school and how she was able to cope with the situations around her. I think this is a book that is good to read to students in general education or students in special education. It is a book that all students can relate to. It shows that there is always hope in every situation; don’t ever give up or think things are too hard. ( )
