New novel in the Kencyrath series, sequel to Honor's Paradox. Adventure in a well-crafted high fantasy land. Kothifir the Great, ruled by an obscenely obese god-king, peopled with colorful, dueling guilds, guarded by the Southern Host of the Kencyrath. Here Jame arrives, only to find that the turbulent city claims more of her attention as the Talisman than the Host's training fields do as a second year randon cadet. Mysteries abound: Caravans plunge deep into the hostile Southern Wastes and return laden with fabulous riches -- from what source, and why do they crumble to dust if not claimed by the god-king's touch? Karnids from Urakarn prowl the shadows, preaching the return of their mysterious prophet. An unstable Kencyr temple rumbles in the outer, decayed rings of the city. Then too, someone in the Host's camp is trying to get Jame killed. In order to save the present, Jame must search the past, be it fifteen years ago when as a boy her brother Torisen arrived here, unknown and unwanted, or three thousand years ago when the Wastes were a great sea ringed with rich civilizations. Somehow, Tori survived. Somehow, the cities of the plain were destroyed in one catastrophic night. Now Kothifir's gods have lost their power and its proud towers are falling. What curse out of the past has struck it? Jame, a potential Nemesis, must try to stop the destruction--without undoing time itself. About P.C. Hodgell's Kyncyrath Series: "P.C. Jame's world always leaves me a little confused as to who is who, but there were plenty of oddities to keep me amused and death, lots of death. ( )

Unlike the two or three previous books in the Kencyrath series this one doesn't seem to keep it's diverse threads split between Jame and Torisen, their present their pasts, the far past and the interchange of dreams, well in hand and moving well together. Stuff happens, stuff has happened, stuff that has happened is visited and the smallest fraction are recovered from the past. A few good moments, but a serious let down from the way the series had been going. ( )

So, yeah, I gobbled up book 7. The cadets, the Knorth contingent with Jame as their lordan, are sent south to the join the Southern Host in the city of . . . . A caravan of traders, with a Seeker to help guide them, is sent southwards into the wastes, Jame's troops with them. And then the fun begins, of course. I know some are impatient with Tori's development and I agree it is sort of maddening--kind of an obvious device to keep drawing the reader along--but he really does hate the Shanir and his soul is captive still to his father. And anyway, once he figures it all out, would there still be much of a story? Well. It is true that almost all storytelling depends on people either choosing not to tell each other important things or not listening when they are told important things, innit? I 'm still perfectly happy with these, I enjoy the details of the place and the way the different cultures interact and the creatures and many of the other characters a great deal. **** ( )

Kothifir the Great, ruled by an obscenely obese god-king, peopled with colorful, dueling guilds, guarded by the Southern Host of the Kencyrath. Here Jame arrives, only to find that the turbulent city claims more of her attention than she thought possible. Traveling through Time, dealing with the four Elemental gods, dealing with her own God and his priests, Jame just deal with internal and external threats and pressures.   My Thoughts I was enjoying this up until the 45% mark. Then everything that I didn't like about the previous books reared it's ugly head until the 90% mark.   Jame, and her brother Tori, both act stupid. They won't take action, they hesitate, they allow threats against themselves to go completely unanswered, they practically invite people to harm them.   At one point Jame is thrown down a hole to an Under-City by the high City's Intelligence group. They try to kill her. And she does NOTHING about it. It doesn't enter into her equation at all.   A lot of "blind eye" turning goes on; by Jame, by Tori, by the Kothifirites, by the Kencyrath. Enough by so many people that I couldn't enjoy my read a whole lot.   Plot-wise this book doesn't advance the overall plot very much. The theological questions about the Three Who Are One still remain, the Kencyrath are as divided, stupid and self-centred as in any book before and the Lords of the Kencyrath, ie Jame and Tori, still aren't leading.   I am DONE with this series. If I could get stand alone novels maybe I could keep going. But Hodgell is making this a series, albeit a pointless and never-ending series, ala GRR Martin'esque style.   Rating: 3 of 5 Stars Author: P.C. Hodgell " ( )

Seventh in a series, so I can't say that this is a starting point... I've really all of the Kencyrath books with the exception of #5, which I missed somehow... Even for those who've been following the story, chronologically, Hodgell's presentation can get confusing. And here, even chronology is skewed...

We're still following Jame, as she continues to struggle balancing her studies at the randon college with her ever-increasing extra-curricular responsibilities and powers.

Here, there's a mission into a city that may be in another time altogether. And wherever Jame goes, it seems trouble follows. The city of Kothifir is caught up in a Change, where all power structures and official posts are turned on their head. And those power structures any all emanate from the Temple that dates to Jame's peoples' arrival on this world...

Well, that's the main (?) plot line. There are quite a few others, There are flashbacks, visions, and segment's from Jame's brother Torisen's POV, where I wasn't quite sure where or when they quite belonged. This is typical of this series, and fans will not be dismayed.

I like quite a lot of things about Hodgell's writing - not least the no-holds-barred violence and dark elements which are a bit unusual in this type of story. But at this point I'm not sure that Jame will ever graduate - and not because of any plot on her enemies' part... it just seems like she's been in this school for many years!

Advance copy provided by NetGalley - many thanks for the opportunity to follow this series! As always, my opinions are my own. ( )
