When Alexander helps an old man instead of going to see the annual l8ighting of the Christmas torch, he does not realize the reward his kindness will bring.

High in the mountains lies the town of Noel, surrounded by beautiful white walls and a great silver gate. Every year Alexander and his mother walk the long distance to Noel to watch the lighting of the village Christmas tree. This year Alexander learns that the Keeper of the Flame will choose the person who has given the truest gift of Christmas to light the flame. On his way to Noel, Alexander helps a poor old man he finds lying in the snow. His act of charity is rewarded when he is chosen to light the Christmas flame. Alexander learns that it isn't what you have to give, but how you give of yourself that matters most.

A small boy leaves his mother to visit the town of Noel to observe the lighting of the village Christmas tree. Traveling many miles on foot, he is weary. As he approaches the town, he finds a man, freezing in the cold with little protective cover.

Knowing he will be late, and the gates will be closed, still, he helps the stranger. When he does arrive at the village, his mission is to find help and, while he is distraught at not seeing the celebration, his mandate is to get assistance.

The door is closed, but then suddenly opened. As he observes the throngs of people who are leaving lavish gifts, he is sad knowing he is poor and his no gift to give.

When he great torch is shining and flaming, he is called forward to pass the torch to light the flame that will symbolically keep the village warm.

Of all the people, he is honored. He is honored for the fact that he stopped to help when all walked past the man in need.

This book is a great example of the truest gift of all, the gift of self service to others. This is a wonderful book that encompasses the true meaning of giving. It is a great story to read to children during the holiday season, especially to children of this day in age who are so focused on themselves. I would read this book to children in the age range from K, all the way through highschool, because of the wonderful message it portrays. ( )

Personal Response:
I collect Christmas books so I am always on the lookout for a new one to add to my collection. This is one I will definitely be adding. Richard Paul Evens is also one of my favorite author's so that is another reason I was drawn to this book. I really like the message of how important it is to reach out an help others. In doing so we help ourselves.
