On the surface, this is a story of two young men whose mothers failed them in different ways, coming to terms with uneven attraction, the cracking of the masks they've built to weather life, and one shock after another threatening one or both of them. Under that, this is a story of the weight of grief, and the power love offers to ease emotional wounds both old and new. It is also a story of quiet heroism, and that always appeals strongly to me. (
