For little girls, the lifelong love of horses usually begins between ages four and five with a pony ride at the state fair, a classic Bryer horse, or a pink and purple "My Little Pony." By age ten, the "Mommy, I want a pony" begins and it's as if the young girl has been inoculated with some type of horse loving serum. It's in the blood to stay. The passion for a horse overcomes the pain of losing a boyfriend or later in life a husband because the devotion of a horse is unmatched. Starting with the first licensed U.S. African-American female thoroughbred trainer, Vicky Moon tells the fascinating stories of women who have succeeded in making horses their career. There are the three women who "drive" horses -- a hansom cab driver in New York City, a harness driver, and the owner of a carriage museum and equine resort. There is the first U.S. licensed female jockey who currently runs a non-profit horse day camp for high-risk children. The first woman to win the U.S. Open Polo Championship who has been called one of the fastest people on a horse and who now serves as a role model for many younger players. A steeplechase trainer and Breeder's Cup champion who nurtures young thoroughbreds who win top honors---sometimes with prize-winning femaile steeplechase jockey on them. Then there are Kelly Klein, Mary Lou Whitney, Bo Derrick, Glenn Close and other celebs and others who are not so famous including: horse-loving grooms, hot walkers, exercise riders; as well as veterinarians, a champion dressage rider, a western rider, and a roping champion. "Women Who Love Horses" is a delight for all those little girls, their parents, and horse-loving friends. And as the author writes: "Throughout life, with time out for a family and possibly an unrelated career, horses are a constant fixture waiting in the barn with a nicker and a nudge. Somehow women always return to their first love."… (mehr)
