The story of "shy young Peter Mark Roget, [for whom] books were the best companions--and it wasn't long before Peter began writing his own book. But he didn't write stories; he wrote lists. This is the kind of book I would've loved as a kid. Heck, it's the kind of book I love now. There are so many details to examine and it's such an intriguingly spare telling of a man's life and work. It makes me want to know more about Roget. It makes me want to go read the thesaurus! Once again, brilliantly done by the dynamic duo Bryant and Sweet. I was also a big fan of last year's [b:A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin|13642600|A Splash of Red The Life and Art of Horace Pippin|Jennifer Fisher Bryant|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1344370650s/13642600.jpg|19257840] and here they've done and equally remarkable job. Bravo! Hooray! Encore! ( )

A compelling picture book biography of a man compelled to keep lists to impose order on a disorderly world. It's the sort of introduction that whets your appetite to learn more. ( )

Peter Roget loved books and treasured words. At the age of 8, he started to write his own book but instead of stories he wrote ordered lists of organized, categorized and curated words. His lists became longer and longer until they became one of the most important reference guides of our time. Roget was a brilliant, shy man who became a doctor filled with innovative ideas. It wasn't until later in his life that his unique lists became the book we know today as the thesaurus. Detailed illustrations are done in collage style with labels and lists!

I like lists, too so it was fun to read this book and learn about Roget and how we got the thesaurus.

In the picture book biography, author Jen Bryant thoughtfully recounts the life of Peter Mark Roget and writing of his thesaurus. Inspired by Roget's original hand-written manuscript and its lists of words as well as Roget's other scientific classifications and illustrations, illustrator Melissa Sweet illuminates Roget's life with mixed media and collage. The margins and word art are filled with lists of words from Roget's original thesaurus.

To make sense of the world around him, Peter Mark Roget made lists of words. Starting at ta young age, Roget was focused on finding 'the right word'. Although Roget continued on to tutor, study and practice medicine, and raise a family, Roget never stopped making lists. Ultimately, he wanted to make his thesaurus available for everyone not just doctors and scientists. In 1852 he published his thesaurus of a 1000 lists organized by idea for easy access.
