"High summer in Acker's Gap, West Virginia--but no one's enjoying the rugged natural landscape. Not while a killer stalks the small town and its hard-luck inhabitants. County prosecutor Bell Elkins and Sheriff Nick Fogelsong are stymied by a murderer who seems to come and go like smoke on the mountain. At the same time, Bell must deal with the return from prison of her sister, Shirley--who, like Bell, carries the indelible scars of a savage past. In the third mystery chronicling the journey of Bell Elkins and her return to her Appalachian hometown, we also meet Lindy Crabtree--a coal miner's daughter with dark secrets of her own, secrets that threaten to explode into even more violence. Acker's Gap is a place of loveliness and brutality, of isolation and fierce attachments--a place where the dead rub shoulders with the living, and demand their due"--… (mehr)

The 3rd of the Bell Elkins series, this suspenseful murder mystery novel is every bit as good as all of the others. I still love the descriptions of West Virginia, which put me right back where I have visited so many times. As always, not only is the setting very real, but the characters are also. Once again, I had no clue whodunit when it was revealed in the end. ( )

Excellent characterization continues from first two books, great writing about setting, solution of major whodunit a bit OTT. ( )

Another solid installment in the Bell Elkins mystery series. Again, Keller brings together multiple storylines while also developing the main characters and introducing some new ones. Prosecutor Bell Elkins and Sheriff Nick Fogelsong are faced with dead end after dead end as they attempt to solve two brutal murders that have the people of Acker's Gap fearing for their lives. This is now one of my favorite mystery series - strong in plot, character, and writing. I have the fourth installment waiting on my shelf, and the fifth comes out on August 23. ( )

Once again a very well written and easy to read book. I hate to see the end of Bella. ( )

This murder mystery was written to hold the readers attention. I do enjoy this author's writing style. The adventure in this book was believable. Most of the characters I wanted to believe in. The ending was a little to tightly wrapped up for my liking, but it was still believable. I do plan to go back and read any of the books this author has written in the past, but I missed when they were new. ( )
