This was a very quick read and wasn’t at all what I expected; it didn’t really have much to do with New York or indeed Christmas. I suppose, putting the title aside, it wasn’t a bad little story. There is a little twist, although it was a very easily guessable ‘whodunit’. I haven’t read any of Anne Perry’s books before so I am not familiar with her Thomas Pitt series. In this book, Thomas’ daughter, Jemima, is escorting her friend, Delphinia, to New York to be married into the wealthy and powerful Albright family. Delphinia has a skeleton in her closet that puts her impending marriage in jeopardy – the mother she thought was dead is alive and well, and is living in New York with a questionable reputation. If Delphinia’s mother, Maria, attends the wedding, Delphinia will be shamed. Jemima agrees to visit Maria with Harley Albright, who is Delphinia’s future brother-in-law, to ask her to stay away from the wedding. When Jemima arrives at Maria’s apartment she finds her dead and Jemima is accused of her murder. Now Jemima must find out what really happened to clear her name and find out who framed her. It’s not a bad little story to pass an hour or so – a bit like a Sunday afternoon Miss Marple. Apart from one twist, that I didn’t see coming, it was quite predictable. Perhaps it’s a book that the older generation might enjoy. I received this book from the publisher, Headline, via Bookbridgr in exchange for an honest review. Read Triple Jeopardy and was curious how Jemina met Patrick. This is a quick read -- a novella. Jemina accompanies a friend to NY for the friend's society wedding. Staying with the grooms family, Jemina gets talked into helping the groom's brother locate Jemina's mother who abandoned her when she was too. Jemina locates where she's living a discovers her dead body and is arrested by the local police officer, Patrick. He believes she's innocent and works with her to find the real murderer. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

HTML:Anne Perry??s new Christmas novel is an irresistible tale of love, betrayal, greed, murder, and selfless devotion. For the first time, Perry??s annual yuletide offering is set in New York City??a sparkling young metropolis bursting with life, promise, and subtle menace. The year is 1904. Twenty-three-year-old Jemima Pitt, the daughter of Thomas Pitt, head of Britain??s Special Branch, is crossing the Atlantic. She is traveling with an acquaintance, Delphinia Cardew, who is to marry the aristocratic Brent Albright in a high-society New York wedding??a grand affair that will join together two fabulously wealthy families, titans of the international financial world. But Jemima senses a mysterious shadow darkening the occasion. Missing from the festivities is Delphinia??s mother, Maria, who is marked by disgrace. Nearly sixteen years ago, Maria abandoned young Delphinia and disappeared??and now the Albrights refuse to mention her name. But when Harley, the groom??s charismatic brother, asks Jemima to help him search for Maria and forestall the scandal that would surely follow if the prodigal parent turned up at the wedding, she agrees to assist him. From Hell??s Kitchen to Fifth Avenue, the Lower East Side to Central Park, Jemima trudges through strange, snowy streets, asking questions but getting few answers??and never suspecting that she is walking into mortal danger, from which not even a handsome young police officer named Patrick Flannery may be able to protect her. Once more, Anne Perry delivers a suspenseful, deeply moving novel that captures the essence of the holiday spirit. This story starts out in very early 1900's and Finny and her companion are on their way to the city of New York in USA because she will be wedding her intended. Her father is ill and can't make the trip. Her mother had left her when very young. After the meet the family and stay with them she takes up with
Jemima and he plan to find the real Marie and have her stay away from the wedding. Problem is he follows her but later Jemima walks into the woman's apartment and finds her dead. She is being charged with the death. Mr. Harley was the one framing her. Things get very involved and the cops take charge and with Jemima's help and tracking down others who knew Marie you wonder if they will find out the truth and who really Killed her....lots of twists and turns and not very many characters.
Quite the mystery and I had no idea it would end as such...
