WTF, Evolution?!: A Theory of Unintelligible Design

From the hilarious and world famous blog of the same name comes WTF, Evolution? A four-colour impulse book with more than 100 photographs of the world's weirdest, wackiest creatures. Hilarious text accompanying the photos portrays Evolution as a character who proceeds clumsily and without direction, testing out every half-baked or ill-advised idea it comes up with until one of them finally sticks. This haphazard methodology produces creatures like the emperor tamarin, a monkey with a moustache bigger than its face (apparently made during Evolution's hipster phase); the flannel moth, which, as a larva, looks convincingly like Donald Trump's hair; the macaque, endowed with an enormous pink butt; spiders made to look like bird poop; and a warty pig with a blue rocker mohawk. Much additional sidebar material is incorporated throughout, such as: special features on plants and extinct animals, top ten lists (e.g., weirdest noses of all time), letters from evolution throughout history in the style of explorer's logs, passive aggressive (okay, sometimes aggressive) notes to evolution from disgruntled creatures, and other miscellany. WTF, Evolution? captures the sweetness of Unlikely Friendships, the awkwardness of Awkward Family Photos, and the real science and humorous bent of Why Do Men Have Nipples?… (mehr)

The title says it all. ( )

I'd been thinking about getting this for a while, as I'd loved some of Grunbaum's blog posts. I hesitated, though, knowing it was the kind of thing I wanted to share with Jefferson, and I wasn't sure it would be appropriate. So when I was at the bookstore, I made sure to flip through the sex session, and it looked okay. I mean, sure, plenty of talk about penises, maybe a tiny bit of language, but, um, 10-year-olds should know that animals have sex? And sometimes have weird genitalia? Whatever. I bought it.

Sure enough, we read about half of it cuddling on the couch together, giggling, then both caught up on what the other had read with us. We both agreed it was funniest when the narrator was having discussions with evolution, rather than just describing something. And, of course, the entries Jefferson chose to read to my parents when they visited were all from the sex section. Of course.

Often I wanted more actual science information about an animal, but this is a humor book, and I suppose I know how to google.

Lots of fun. ( )
