"Hunting Old Sammie" is a dark comedy about next-door neighbors who regard each other as small-stakes terrorists. Armand Terranova, once a petroleum-industry analyst, has escaped his Wall Street overlords in the wake of 9/11 by moving his family to Ithaca, NY, where he and his wife Leah have rebuilt an old house into their new home. Just across the property line, Luke Robideau lives with his elderly mother in a run-down Cape Cod wreathed with an aura of poverty and a dread sense of threats both foreign and domestic rising on all sides. During the summer of 2004, suicide bombers and IEDs kill American soldiers in Iraq. Al Qaeda kidnaps aid workers, translators, and journalists, then beheads them. In Afghanistan, the hunt for Osama bin Laden has stalled amid the caves of Tora BoraIn his renovated bungalow, Armand monitors America's wars even as he hides from them-a practice he shares unknowingly with Luke, who has stocked a sniper's nest in anticipation of fighting terrorists head-on. Luke and Armand have never exchanged a word and distrust each other on sight. Luke's cats and dogs roam freely and foul Armand's lawn and patio. Stalking the animals with a BB-gun, Armand feels his neighbor as a threat: an unmarried, ill-kempt big man who lives with his elderly mother. To Luke, Armand is an immigrant peasant lucky at Luke's expense. Luke depends on Mother's Social Security and siblings' checks to live in his childhood home, while his neighbor has a family, a renovated house, and enough money. How can a man feel safe in his ordinary life when his country is fighting two wars against hidden enemies and his neighbor seems a co-conspirator? When small-animal excrement begins to fly across the property line, paranoia, hostility, and suspicion tip toward violence and a confrontation only one man can win.… (mehr)

I found this book interesting. Difficult to follow the authors story progression once or twice but it all lead right to where it needed. Very enjoyable book to read. ( )

I won this book in exchange for an honest review, so thanks to the powers that be over at LibraryThing and to the author John Lauricella.

I have never heard of John Lauricella, much less his book, however reading over a brief description, I became intrigued. Everything I thought this book was gonna be it was not. Do I mean that in a bad way??...No. It just was not what I was expecting at all. For starters, the title...thought it had to do with a time in history so very long ago...was thinking it was referencing "Uncle Sam". How surprised I was to find it was referring to something completely different. This book is a story of the lives of people..neighbors, post September 11. At first it appears to be ordinary mundane lives but over time you start connecting with the characters...you start getting to the bulk of the matter. The author has a way with really getting into the thoughts of these people. Thoughts we all might have from time to time but we don't ever really mention out loud. Gritty..chaotic..brash..honest..angry..bitter and confused feelings and in his characters cases, feelings exacerbated by the way 9/11 has left so many people thinking and feeling. Bitter neighbors with scores to settle..something most of us can relate to and that's just what this book is, relate able. It's the lives of people if their brains spoke out loud. Was I expecting more??...maybe I was. But am I disappointed??...No. It's just different. It's a good different. John Lauricella's writing style is superb and that's what made me keep going to the end. He really knows what people think and how and why they think it.

This is not the most exciting book in terms of plot but it's worth a read. Wanting something interesting, real, able to relate to on some level?? This book does that. ( )

"HUNTING OLD SAMMIE is a powerful book limning a specific moment in our culture. It is dark and lyrical, artistically wrought and emotionally fraught."
