Owl doesn’t know how to count, so takes a night flight to looks around in order to teach herself how. As she flies, she notices 1 prairie dog on a hill, and counts one. Then she sees 2 mice in the field and counts 1,2, and so forth, until she see 10 snails among the flowers. As Owl learns, the current number and all prior numbers are put under her wings. I love the artwork. The numbers are found in the animals; each animal has the number imbedded in the artwork. For example, for the 9 squirrels in a tree, each squirrel’s tail was curled into a number nine, also for each number, all prior numbers are under the owl’s wings. A hidden theme in this book is that if you want to learn something, you can teach yourself to do it. This is a cute story that children will love. Ages 1 – 6. I love how the numbers are hiding inside the owl's wings. The owl is flying through the night and sees so many animals on each full page picture spread. This book is great for practicing numbers and counting plus working on number recognition in trying to find the numbers in the owl's wings. It also reads aloud in storytime really well. Like! ( )
