When they attend her birthday party, they discover she is very fun and begin to understand her. Ages 4-8 I really liked this book for many reasons. I liked the way the author incorporated higher level vocabulary words such as sparrows egg or odd because the author used these words in child friendly ways in which the readers could understand. I also liked the way the pictures in the book were displayed. Some of the pictures were the whole page and some of the pictures were half but there was a picture on each page. The pictures were engaging and they went along with the text on the page. I also enjoyed the illustrations because they really helped me imagine what was going on every page. I also enjoyed how this book sort of forced the reader to think about tough issues that happens to children every single day. The main idea of this book would be that we cannot always judge a book by its cover and that even though a person may seem odd or weird we should always find a way to look past it because they could be friendly cool or nice without us even knowing. It pushes the reader to remember not to judge a person too quickly. I really liked "Odd Velvet," and I would give it five stars. This contemporary realistic picture book is about a little girl named Velvet who is viewed as "different" and "odd" by her peers. I appreciated that in the illustrations, Velvet's features even look different than those of the other children, with her eyes very far apart and her glasses comically large. Velvet's classmates ostracize her, less so for her looks but more so because she comes from a low-income family. Although it is not stated explicitly, it is clear that Velvet's family is not as wealthy as the other children's families because she lacks many of the modern luxuries that her classmates take for granted. While all of the other students bring the teacher fancy gifts such as "cinnamon tea, lace handkerchiefs, and heart shaped boxes of potpourri," Velvet gives her an array of items that she had found outside, along with her favorite shoelace. Velvet brings a humble bagged lunch to school, wears old clothes and her sister's hand-me-downs, and brings items such as a milkweed and volcano ash for show-and-tell. The other students are polite to her, but none of them want to be friends with the odd girl until Velvet wins the class drawing contest. The students begin to appreciate Velvet as a talented artist, despite the fact that she had used "just her eight crayons" instead of a large set of supplies like Sarah. Still, the students are wary of going to Velvet's house for her birthday party because she lives in a small house with a wooden swing instead of "a jungle gym or tether ball." When they arrive, though, they have a wonderful time painting faces and decorating Velvet's room like a castle. They do not mind that "there were no birthday magicians, or wizards. Not even a clown." The children realize that just because Velvet is "odd" because her family cannot afford some of the luxuries to which they are accustomed, she can still have fun and is worthy of being their friend. The "big idea" that this story expresses is that one should not base friendship on how much money someone does or does not have, but rather on the person is on the inside. Students will almost certainly encounter peers who come from low-income families, and this lesson is something that they can apply to their everyday lives. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Although she dresses differently from the other girls and does things which are unusual, Velvet eventually teaches her classmates that even an outsider has something to offer. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
