This is a great novel to use to introduce Plains Indian culture into a classroom. The illustrations seem to accurately portray Plains Indian clothing and items. The side notes in the story line that depicts Iktomi's thinking also explains the clothing worn by him. I think the story encompasses a lot of Plains Indian culture, from their clothing, mode of transportation, to their belief in the spirits in nature. Iktomi and the Ducks by Paul Goble This is a story about a native name Iktomi. He is a trickster and tricks the ducks into getting captured and becoming his dinner. Iktomi however is tricked by a coyote. I think this is a funny story and know students would just love because it is funny to see the Ikatomi get tricked. I think is a clever story about how to not be tricky or greedy because it may come back to haunt you. I would use this story with Pre-K to Kindergarten students. I would discuss the life skills of generosity and honesty. I tell them I am going to read a story about what can happen if you do not follow those life skills. Gisela Jernigan, Ph.D. (Children's Literature) In this third picture book depicting further pranks of Iktomi, the trickster of Plains Indian legends, the hapless joker fools some ducks and is about to enjoy a duck dinner, when he in turn is outsmarted by a crafty coyote. Both the bright, watercolor illustrations and lively, conversational text show an irreverent sense of humor, which Goble explains in an author's note, is a traditional characteristic of the trickster tale which appears in various forms throughout Native American folklore. He also explains how the small print represents Iktomi's thoughts while the gray print presents opportunities for audience participation. 1990, Orchard, $16.99, $15.95 and $5.95. Ages 4 to 10.
