In this essay -- adapted from her TEDx talk of the same name -- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, award-winning author of Americanah, offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author's exploration of what it means to be a woman now -- and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.… (mehr)

A powerful punch of reality. Chimamanda's essay is so eloquently argued that I feel she could win over any cynics, simply by encouraging awareness and critical thought around the topic of feminism.

If you're on the fence about seeking out this book because it is so short, wondering what it could possibly do for you, just read it and find out. It should be read over and over again until the words become part of your soul. ( )

This is a good beginner text for introduction to feminism, especially to realize the subtle ways in which women are treated differently in our society. I think everyone should checkout this book once. ( )

Important book. Based on a TED talk Adichie gave as part of a conference on Africa in 2012, this book enlightens readers to gender bias in society without being preachy; rather, her points are made effectively via a series of anecdotes, some of which are African. Here is a simple, yet effective example: the sacrifices a man might make in a marriage, no weekday drinking with the boys versus the sacrifices a woman often makes, a career. Her answer is to raise boys and girls, not by gender, but by their abilities, with both taught to take care of their needs. ( )

At just over 45 minutes long, this e-audiobook was the perfect length for my evening walk, and listening to Adichie read her extended essay was much nicer than reading it myself. I needed no convincing on the points she made, of course, and most were anecdotal, but that didn't make them any less powerful, true, and well-presented. ( )

nonfiction essay (Nigerian woman author).
This is a printed version of the author's TEDx talk (or a 20-minutes-long, very short book, if you prefer print). It's good, and I hope that people listen and understand that "feminism" is not a bad thing to be, but because of its length and intended audience it has a limited reach/impact for me. I would probably recommend the video instead of the book unless the book is more accessible to you. ( )

These are little things, but sometimes it is the little things that sting the most.
Masculinity is a hard, small cage, and we put boys inside this cage.
But by far the worst thing we do to males—by making them feel they have to be hard—is that we leave them with very fragile egos. The harder a man feels compelled to be, the weaker his ego is.

And then we do a much greater disservice to girls, because we raise them to cater to the fragile egos of males.
The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn't have the weight of gender expectations.
For centuries, the world divided human beings into two groups and then proceeded to exclude and oppress one group. It is only fair that the solution to the problem acknowledge that.
