The Rat (Disgusting Creatures) by Elise Gravel packs a lot of information in its pages and includes colorful images and punchy commentary. My daughter enjoys looking at the fun pictures of the Rat, and some of the large words are easier for her to notice, which makes a teachable moment for her to learn new words. While some of the information may be too much for kids in one sitting, after a few reads, kids will learn more an more about rats.Read the full review: http://savvyverseandwit.com/2014/09/the-rat-by-elise-gravel.html Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. I love this simple book about the rat. I especially love that this rat is a girl rat. The illustrations are fun, colorful, and not scary for little ones and the true facts are easy to digest... just enough text to be perfect for preschool age kiddos who love non-traditional animals. It's also a delightful crossover between fiction and nonfiction. I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the "disgusting critters" series. Felt like this one got off to a slow start and skirted opportunities to give us more information-for example, what kind of diseases do they spread? keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

One in a series of humorous books about disgusting creatures, The Rat is a look at the black rat. It covers such topics as the rat's long, agile tail (it's good for balancing and picking noses), long teeth (they can chew through anything, including books) and disgusting taste in food (delicious electrical wires in tomato sauce, anyone?). Although silly and off-the-wall, The Rat contains real information that will tie in with curriculum. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

This kids' series focuses on the ickier side of things, each book "told" by a character as they share information on themselves with the readers. In this case, it's Debbie Debbie, the black rat.
The illustrations are cute, with the text both written and drawn. I do at times wish the occasional image was more dynamic but they are still enjoyable and the facts presented are easy to digest (that might be a non-intentional rat pun, there) and relevant.
I have a paperback, which is thing and easy to carry around in a slim bag. Likewise, the hardcover is of smaller size and easy enough to tote around if someone wants something more sturdy.
I find Elise Gravel to be a reliable creator. Her books are good, both quirky and informative, and typically available in French and English. ( )
