This is not a book that can stand alone. As the third book in a series, it would seem reading the first two books is essential to understanding The Sound of Thunder; I have not read [b:Into the Woods|14431290|Into the Woods (BIGFOOT Boy #1)|J. Torres|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1346372139s/14431290.jpg|20073357] or [b:The Unkindness of Ravens|17780829|The Unkindness of Ravens|J. Torres|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1367782083s/17780829.jpg|24867672] and felt quite lost as a result. Mention is made of previous events, but they're not summarized in such a way that new readers can understand what happened in the first two books. Connections between the characters are unexplained, leaving readers to wonder about the relationship between Rufus and Penny (cousins? friends?) and to whom Grammy is grandma.

Even for those who have been diligently reading the Bigfoot Boy series from the beginning, the length and plot of The Sound of Thunder seem more equivalent to a single issue of a comic book (usually less than $5) than a hardcover book priced at $17.95. For that price, I would generally expect a collection of comics (issues 1 through 5, for example) with a beginning, middle, and end to the overarching story, rather than a relatively short story that includes relatively no beginning and a somewhat ambiguous ending.

On the plus side, the artwork is bright, colorful, and well-done; the cast of characters are diverse both in terms of race and gender; and the content is kid-friendly and appropriate for most ages.
