Literarisch erweist sich der Roman als interessantes Fingerspiel, so wechselt Hemingway die Erzählperspektiven und Handlungsstränge und bietet stringente Charaktere. Den Leser jedoch überfordern die nahezu zusammenhanglosen, verwirrenden Erzählstränge und teilweisen konfusen Handlungssprünge. Auch die gewohnt sperrige und bar jeden Fachwissens verfasste Übersetzung von Annemarie Horschitz-Horst trägt ihren Teil dazu teil, dass dieses Werk kaum Lesefreude bereitet. ( )
