I really liked the authors technique of writing. On one of the pages the main character was in class with a guest that was there from China. She had been having problems with one of the boys in her class, and that day there were learning about Haiku's when he was making fun of her. She started to write a Haiku about him and she also wrote some about her two friends in the class. I liked this additive to the story because it made the characters seem real because you could read the emotion that was shown in her poem. Another thing that I liked about this was the characters. All of them had a believable role and it was easy to picture them in my head as I was reading this book. When Emily was going on about how she felt bad for not liking her grandmothers birthday present and how she understood the real meaning behind it, you could genuinely feel the emotion coming from within the book and I really liked how the author captured that. Another reason I liked this book was the little additives to the plot. In the beginning of the book, Emily is trying to find her good luck charm for the year. When she finds one, her to other friends want one too but they can't find them on her own. Emily then goes out to find her two friends good luck charms and they clank them together to promise to be friends for the year. I really liked how the author put this into the book because I can really see children doing this and I'm pretty sure I did something like this when I was Emily and her friends ages in the book. The main idea that I got from this book was that even though you don't wish for something to happen, some of those things are the best that can happen to you.
