This is a delightful take on a classic nativity story. I was a little worried that it would be a 'dumbed down' or simplified version of the birth of Jesus, the visits of the shepherds, the arrival of the three kings and the flight into Egypt, but it wasn't. It was presented formally, as with all the best Christmas stories. It is one for reading round a log fire with the lights on the Christmas tree twinkling behind you.

What makes it really charming are the illustrations. Each scene is accompanied by a full-colour photograph depicting the characters in costume. The actors are all guinea pigs. I find them adorable without being sickly, but then I'm a guinea pig fan. Each to his or her own. If you like animals, and you like a classic retelling of the reason we celebrate Christmas, even if you don't consider yourself religious, this is for you.
