There's a new Wicked Witch in Oz??and her name is Dorothy. This digital original novella is the second installment in the prequel arc to the edgy and exciting New York Times bestseller Dorothy Must Die.

Dorothy Gale is back . . . and she's not the sweet little heroine of Oz anymore. She's power-hungry and vicious, and she leaves a trail of destruction beneath her spike-heeled, magical shoes. But behind the scenes, there's someone else pulling the strings. Someone who doesn't want fame or glory??just control.

Glinda of the North brought Dorothy back to Oz for a reason. And in The Witch Must Burn, a young maid is about to discover that a witch who says she's Good might be the most dangerous kind of Wicked.

The Witch Must Burn, by debut author Danielle Paige, is a dark and compelling reimagining of a beloved classic and is perfect for fans of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, Beastly by Alex Flinn, and Wicked by Gregory Maguire… (mehr)

It is a thing now for writers to write this novellas to their books. I have not read any of them before and these two did not change my mind. I have not read any before because I believed that if something was really important it will be in the book. I was right. These two are not bad. The stories are just fine but they really do not add anything to the overall story arc. Yes it was interesting to learn that Glinda summoned Dorothy back to Oz because Ozma will not be easily controlled but it unneeded to read the book. The second one about Jellia was not as interesting. Again the writing was fine but nothing was really added. But now I have done the read the novellas thing and I will not be doing it again.

I give these two novellas a Three out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this novellas from Amazon with my own money. ( )

A few weeks back, I reviewed Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. I mentioned that she had since written prequels to that novel as well as a sequel. I placed holds on all these books at my local library…along with everyone else apparently. Finally, The Witch Must Burn became available. This novella (just in case you're unfamiliar with the term this is used to describe a short story of a few hundred pages) focuses on Jellia, Dorothy's personal maid. (Readers of Dorothy Must Die will remember this character vividly.) We're also given a bit of a glimpse into Glinda the Good Witch. It's really nothing more than a tantalizing morsel to hold the reader until they can get their hands on the next installment…which might take a while in my case. :-/ ( )

The entire idea of the world of Oz is incredible. Whenever an author creates a world with characters that you care about with the power of their imagination it’s something to be admired.

The author of the Dorothy Must Die series, Danielle Paige, is continuously blowing my mind. Taking a well-known world like Oz and making it your own is definitely a feat. This Oz is dark and twisted with intrigue. The changes to some of the most beloved characters is just so intriguing.

I have noticed something slighting odd in the writing. I’m not sure if it’s an intentional part of the author’s writing style, but she tends to start out a little slow and then builds at the end so much that even with a resolution you’re left wanting more. I’m having trouble focusing until I can get home and crack open Dorothy Must Die tonight (I’m so excited!).

You must be thinking, did you like it then? Yeah. I know there are a lot of people that were disappointed in Dorothy Must Die, but based on the prequels I can’t imagine I’ll be bored. I LOVE the characterization of Glinda and Dorothy. The Witch Must Burn gives you more of Glinda and her evil ways and in a word, it was awesome. It seems to end with a great set up for the first book in the series to begin.

A few new characters were introduced in The Witch Must Burn, namely Jellia and Nox. I really hope to see more of them in Dorothy Must Die. I’m also looking forward to learning more about the “resistance” that’s slowing growing in Oz.

I would recommend The Witch Must Burn as the second prequel to the Dorothy Must Die series. These prequels are the perfect example of setting up the plot of the series and adding more enjoyment to the series, if read.
