TONIGHT THE STREETS ARE OURS

***

Se me hizo difícil reseñar Tonight the Streets Are Ours, me ha gustado y a la vez sin embargo hay cosas que me han dejado insatisfecha.

very forgettable

Also, sorry, but Sonnets From the Portuguese is absolutely not the favorite book of any boy. Ever. I'm sorry, have you ever met a boy? Or read Sonnets from the Portuguese? ( )

Warning: this review has been dug up from the deep archives of my google drive were only the most salty, most terrible reviews get put. I have decided to let it see the sun for once... you have been warned...

Like all stories, the one you are about to read is a love story. If it wasn’t, what would be the point?

With this introduction, I was really excited and hopeful with the prospects of the book, and honestly, it didn’t live up to it’s expectation because of the god-awful characters. Everyone from Arden’s dad to Arden’s best friend Lindsey irritated me.

Arden's dad was a complete jerk, and it's so obvious, yet Arden still defends him. He's so absorbed in his work that he doesn't even realize that his daughter plans to go rent a hotel room with her boyfriend, screw around a bit, but that it all goes south and she head up to New York in a cruddy car with her terrible friend, Lindsey. Don't worry that's not even a spoiler because this book was just... I don't even know.

The whole time I was reading anything with Lindsey I just absolutely wanted to scream and throw the book across the room because anyone could see that her and Arden's friendship really is not a good example of a healthy relationship. Period. I don't care how long you've been friends.

I wouldn't care if my so called best friend was storing drugs (drugs mind you) in my locker and got in trouble for doing what she did, I would blame her. I wouldn't take the blame for her and lose everything up to college scholarships for her. That was her problem. And then at the end when Lindsey was being a complete jerk to Arden, Arden was so quick to go back and forgive her and start joking around. No really, when you have a fight with your best friend that big it hurts. For days. And who honestly would leave their best friend with a bunch of weird people in the middle of New York and just drive away, because they wanted to chase after some boy who they had been reading their blog for months, but haven't even known for a day.

And then Peter. Peter pissed me off so freaking much. For the fist three fourths of the book, he is made out to be a perfect little lonely writer, whose brother has just left him and whose girlfriend has broke up with him. You really really side with him, and sympathize with him. You're on his side. When Arden actually meets him, he goes on with this, until you find out at the end, that is was just a bunch of sugar coated crap. He's a complete rich brat, whose hurt everyone around him and is so blind and selfish that he doesn't even try to do anything about it. He hurts Arden in the process, but then she is so ready to forgive him.

This book was okay, the premise was cute, but the characters were terrible.

As much as I wanted to love this book, I just didn't. I absolutely loved This Song Will Save Your Life, and was hoping for the same amount of amazing.

The number one thing was the characters. I didn't care for Arden or Lindsey. Arden took being responsible to the extreme, and Lindsey just didn't care for other people's feelings. They both pretty much used each other to validate how they viewed themselves. This is evident but the first scene in the book. There's no way in hell I would take the fall for a friend in that situation. I don't care if we were like sisters.

I also didn't care for the stalking type behavior that Arden. It's weird, and the whole finding Peter thing was odd too. It might be because I'm much older that I couldn't connect, but it's just not something I would have considered doing.

Even though those two things didn't pull me in, I did like the overall sense of the story. I've always been a fan of Sales's way with words, and it's no exception with this one. She writes beautifully. And the story is always much more than it seems when you start it. That is the reason I will continue to read her work. ( )

This was an interesting book that had a lot to say about loyalty, taking care of others, and learning when to take care of yourself. The characters are definitely interesting although some could be a little more developed and I think the self care message is an important one. Definitely worth a read. ( )
