I liked this okay, but I wish I had read some content warnings first: There's a fair amount of sexual content, and depictions of cruelty to animals, domestic violence, infidelity...it's a long list. Obviously, the plot revolves around the death of a child, so there's that, too. And there's a lot of profanity (especially the f-word), including the names of God and Jesus misused. As far as the mystery part goes, I saw nearly all the twists way ahead of time. The curse of the analytical brain, I guess… makes it hard to be surprised. It did feel a tad long. At around 75% through, it felt like it should be wrapping up, but it was still going on. Some people said the first half of the book was slow. I personally thought it was perfect paced and I was never bored. But if you prefer a page-turner from the beginning, it might be a bit slow for you. An amazing twIst half way though. I even flipped back a couple of pages to see if I had missed something. The book suddenly turns and the whole of the second half is absolutely spectacular. The tension is relentless. Brilliant! Here is what you need to remember if reading the book- it begins with the death of a 5 year old boy! The twist absolutely floored me so much that I put the book down because I had to stop reading it. The book also gets dark, really dark. Just remember it begins with the death of a 5 year old, type dark. I just finished it and I am at a loss of what to write, but I will put up a fuller review. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

So why couldn't I put it down? And why did I stay up way past my bedtime last night to finish it?
Clearly there's something there. It's a page-turner, no doubt. And no matter how preposterous each plot twist seemed -- I *had* to know what was going to happen next. Is there any better testament of a book's entertainment value?
I hate spoilers, so you're not going to get any here. I believe it's best going into a thriller knowing as little as possible. All I will say is that if you want a page turner, or you simply to enjoy a book for its own sake, you've come to the right place.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkely for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
