Young children can learn how to socialize and how to be a good friend from this book. The book has nice colorful and diverse pictures. The book encourages children to be there for their friends in both happy, sad, frustrating and all times. This book shows children how friends can be made and that patience needs to happen to make friends. "How to Grow a Friend", written by, Sara Gillingham, explains what having a friend is like through the use of metaphors. Gillingham uses the growth of plants as a metaphor for friendship. An example she uses in the book is, "And don't let your friend get stuck in the weeds. To grow a garden of friends, remember that new buds can sprout".
