He learns to ride a bike with one leg and is able to provide for his family through that. I would recommend this book to first-third graders. This age group would fit best because they can appreciate the content best and understand the story with the minimalist art. Emmanuel's Dream is based on a real story about a disabled boy who rode 400 miles on a bike in just over a week. Based in Ghana, it is a story about a boy who lives his entire life refusing to be defined by his disability. Reading this story to any middle grade level or subject would be an insight to the culture in Africa, as well as create understanding among students for their disabled peers, boosting empathy. I think this informational text would be good for lower-mid elementary students. This book walks you through the life of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah and the challenges that he faces. He faces his disability of only having one leg, making friends, and caring for his sick mother Confort. This book brings the best message of “In this world, we are not perfect. We can only do our best.” keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people--but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.
