A lot of Marilyn's friends have monsters. It's the latest thing. Each one is just right for its boy or girl. Marilyn really wants a monster, too, but despite her efforts to be the kind of girl no monster could resist, hers just doesn't come. What could be taking it so long? Everyone knows you just have to wait for your monster - but the spunky and determined Marilyn thinks there may be other ways that things can work.… (mehr)

This book was adorable. Marilyn is the last kid to be found by her monster. She feels lonely and left out. She decides to go against the grain and go look for her monster, and it’s a good thing she did. The watercolor illustrations are simply lovely and make this book better than the story alone. ( )

A fun story about friendship and bravery and defying the expected to get what you need. Would be a good addition to an elementary school story time on friendship or monsters or courage. :) ( )

Awwwwwwww. This was such a heartwarming story! Every kid gets a monster, a monster that finds and chooses the child--that's how it'd done. One by one, all the kids at school get monsters, but Marilyn's hasn't shown up. Everyone tells her to be patient, but it's hard when everyone else gets to play and bond with their monsters and she still doesn't have one. She waits... she puts up with her brother saying she'll never have a monster choose her... and then she sets out to find her monster. No, that's not how it works, but she does it anyway. And when she finds her monster stuck in a tree, unable to get to her.

"I got lost," her monster said in his small, soft voice. "And then I got scared. And then I got stuck."

Awwwww. So Marilyn and her monster finally find each other. Of course, this is also a story about the reality that--as an adult--I have yet to embrace: that there are lots of different ways things can work and sometimes you have to trust your heart and do what you think is right, even if it's different from what everyone else is telling you.

I loved the drawings in this book. There are SO MANY different kinds of monsters, so creatively imagined. And each kid's interests/personality is evident in his or her monster. I have read this book several times now, really enjoying the fun personalities and creative looks of each of the monsters. One rides a bike, one looks like a beanbag chair because its kid likes to sit and read, one is gigantic and fights off bullies, one has the same smile as its kid, etc. Such a good story warms my heart, but such illustrations make me want to read the book over and over again. And it makes me wish I had my own monster! ( )

In this world Michelle Knudsen has made, the children are found by a monster and they have a forever friend. We follow Marilyn as she wonders why she has yet to meet her monster. Everyone reminds her that the monster is supposed to find her but her curiosity gets the best of her. She decides to go after what she wants so badly. She doesn't give up and eventually finds that her monster was stuck in a tree. She helps her monster and they are finally friends. Her brother who told her from the beginning she was to wait for her monster was not thrilled when she came home with hers. She felt that it was more important that both her and her monster were now happy together. I think this story teaches it's audience to go for what you truly want despite what people are saying. ( )
