Jeffrey D. Sachs has shown himself to be one of the world's most perceptive and original analysts of global development in his groundbreaking books, including The End of Poverty and Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet. Now, in this major new work he presents a compelling and practical framework for how global citizens can address the seemingly intractable worldwide problems of persistent extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and political-economic injustice. Sachs outlines the holistic way forward: sustainable development. This provocative work offers readers, students, activists, environmentalists, and policy makers the tools, metrics, and practical pathways they need to achieve sustainable development goals. Far more than a rhetorical exercise, this book is designed to inform, inspire, and spur action. Based on Sachs's fourteen years as Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and as Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General on the Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals, The Age of Sustainable Development is a landmark publication and a clarion call for all who care about our planet and global justice.… (mehr)

Hope starts with possibility

The Age of Sustainable Development by Jeffrey D. Sachs (Columbia University Press, $34.95).

For those of us who didn’t get to take the massive open online course on sustainable development that Jeffrey D. Sachs, an economics professor and sustainability guru, taught last year, the heart of it is contained in his most recent book.

The Age of Sustainable Development makes the case, in accessible but well-supported and intellectually sound terms, for a third way toward sustainability, one that doesn’t come at the cost of economic development. Packed full of data, Sachs’ book leans academic, but it’s not so scholarly as to be too daunting for the general reader.

Ultimately, Sachs sees a mix of technological and market-driven solutions that will allow us to grow economies inclusively—with an emphasis on the poorest and most deprived countries—while at the same time conserving our planetary resources. It operates on the assumption that we can’t simply abandon our economies, but must instead steer them toward a sustainable plan.

This is a comprehensive overview of what a solution to humanity’s worldwide crisis might look like–if we ever have either the will or a big enough scare to get going on it–and it’s, at the very least, where we need to start.

A holistic way forward toward global sustainable development, dealing with poverty, the environment, and social injustice. Important.

Amazon: "Jeffrey D. Sachs is one of the world's most perceptive and original analysts of global development. In this major new work he presents a compelling and practical framework for how global citizens can use a holistic way forward to address the seemingly intractable worldwide problems of persistent extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and political-economic injustice: sustainable development.

Sachs offers readers, students, activists, environmentalists, and policy makers the tools, metrics, and practical pathways they need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Far more than a rhetorical exercise, this book is designed to inform, inspire, and spur action. Based on Sachs's twelve years as director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, his thirteen years advising the United Nations secretary-general on the Millennium Development Goals, and his recent presentation of these ideas in a popular online course, The Age of Sustainable Development is a landmark publication and clarion call for all who care about our planet and global justice.

Additional resources for teachers and students are available on Columbia University Press website for the book." ( )
