This series of eight graphic novels tells the story of Buddha's life through the stories of surrounding characters based both on actual historical figures and fictional ones. Told in the Japanese manga style it has a specific style and humour, and the themes are very mature including violence and nudity.

This volume is almost entirely comprised of pain and misery. The two main story arcs are Tatta becoming a warrior to fight the giant, Yatala, to settle the dispute between Magadha & Kosala (which just can't end well), and the story of Buddha's time in Deer Park, where he runs into Dhepa with a group of monks also undergoing ordeals (this can't end well, either.)

Story is still amazing, art is still fantastic, this segment of the plot is a little painful, can't wait for the next one! ( )

Zonder de vorige delen gelezen te hebben, zal het niet eenvoudig zijn om de hele verhaallijn te volgen en zullen er heel wat verwijzingen gemist worden. Dus absoluut een deel waar voorkennis voor nodig is.

In dit deel duurt het bijzonder lang voordat Boeddha zelf in beeld komt en zelfs voordat er aan hem gerefereerd wordt. Omdat de serie toch Boeddha heet en over zijn ontwikkeling gaat, vind ik het niet altijd even eenvoudig om alle bijfiguren te volgen en de betekenis van de nadruk die op hen gelegd wordt te begrijpen. Er wordt wel gehint naar dat ze allen betekenis hebben voor Boeddha zijn leven maar dat is nog steeds weinig duidelijk.

Tekenstijl, humor en verhaalkundig is het weer uitmuntend. Het heeft nergens aan kwaliteit wat dit betreft ingeboet in vergelijking met de vorige delen.

Bijzonder in dit deel is het aandeel dat de herten hebben. Ik wist niet dat ik door deze dieren zo ontroerd kon raken. ( )

Book ends on an interesting crossroad - Prince Crystal (of Kosala with Sudra mother)shamed by Buddha (he also saves his life), Thatta denied from killing Prince when he could, a vengeance (to avenge Chapra and his mother) that he lived for and Dhepa who had reviled Buddha, saved by transfusion of Buddha's own blood.

Volume 5 goes into details about Devadatta's exploits. He does not, to put it lightly, avail himself especially well. He engages in deception, poisoning, framing people for murder and the like. Tatta's life continues to engage me and I find him to be a fairly complex character. Migaila's travails continue and it just seems that she can't catch a break. Dhepa's character gets even more confusing (in a good way) and it's hard to figure him out. At times, he represents some really noble ideals, but he's coming to represent a pretty rigid and unyielding asceticism. It's increasingly difficult to write about these separate volumes because it is meant to be taken as a whole. As such, please see my earlier entries for more information. ( )
