Excellent. Fascinating, beautiful. I can imagine the cartoony characters might take a little getting used to, particularly with the juxtaposition with the beautiful, beautiful detailed backgrounds. But, hey, get used to it. Personally I could have done with a few fewer of the Asterixy jokes, but I can deal. Really looking forward to all the remaining volumes. ( )

This series of eight graphic novels tells the story of Buddha's life through the stories of surrounding characters based both on actual historical figures and fictional ones. Told in the Japanese manga style it has a specific style and humour, and the themes are very mature including violence and nudity.

A lighthearted, sweet & sour biography of Siddharta Gautuma. Probably more useful for ðose wiþ already some knowledge of him, as it does noþing at all to separate fact, legend & fiction. ( )

Nu ik dit tweede deel gelezen heb, begin ik een beetje te wennen aan de plotseling opduikende anachronismen en de vuige taal die door alle rangen en standen wordt uitgesproken.
Het mooiste voorbeeld hiervan vind ik een Indiaasachtige vrouw van hoge afkomst in traditionele kledij wordt, nadat ze angstig wakker wordt uit een nachtmerrie, lichtjes bestraffend toegesproken met de woorden dat ze niet zoveel SF en horror moet lezen. Dit in de context van de geschiedenis dat gaat over het ontstaan van Boeddha!

Daarnaast geeft een verhaal dat zich afspeelt in het westelijk deel van Azië met zijn cultuur van kasten, weergegeven in de mangastijl dat nu juist een kenmerk uit het oostelijk deel van Azië is, een spanning waardoor je als lezer voortdurend ontregeld wordt. Een ontregeling die nieuwsgierigheid opwekt en niet doet afkeren.

De verdere zes delen staan dan ook al in mijn kast klaar om gelezen te worden. ( )
