A new edition based on the timeless business classic??updated to help today's readers succeed more quickly in a rapidly changing world.

For decades, The One Minute Manager® has helped millions achieve more successful professional and personal lives. While the principles it lays out are timeless, our world has changed drastically since the book's publication. The exponential rise of technology, global flattening of markets, instant communication, and pressures on corporate workforces to do more with less??including resources, funding, and staff??have all revolutionized the world in which we live and work.

Now, Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson have written The New One Minute Manager to introduce the book's powerful, important lessons to a new generation. In their concise, easy-to-read story, they teach readers three very practical secrets about leading others??and explain why these techniques continue to work so well.

As compelling today as the original was thirty years ago, this classic parable of a young man looking for an effective manager is more relevant and useful t… (mehr)

Super fast read. Could've been done in a page though. Little far fetched of a scenario. But they had to get the point across by stretching it I guess. ( )

The New One Minute Manager

Lessons and Key Takeaways:

“I don’t make decisions for other people.”- The Manager

Lesson

Don’t make decisions for other people. Let them make decisions for themselves. Especially when leading them. Let them go where their strengths lie and let them excel in that. Build them up through instilling a positive mindset in them. Encourage them through the difficulties that they are facing. Be there to listen. Not to judge. Remember time is your teacher and experience is your classroom. Let people teach you through listening to them at all times. Be empathetic yet slightly removed from the situation by hearing them out and seeking to understand their issue fully so that you can offer the words of wisdom that God placed on your heart to give them at that moment in time.

“That’s where he and I set our One Minute Goals”- Teresa Lee

Lesson

Set your one-minute goals by spending time drafting goals for the month with a due date that is one paragraph long. Be as finitely detailed as possible so you can see all areas you can grow in and mature intellectually, communicative wise, and spiritually.

“For example, instead of setting our goals for us, he listens to our input and works side-by-side with us to develop them. After we agree on our most important goals, each is described on one page.”- Teresa Lee

Lesson

Work side by side with the work you are doing and develop your outreach goals and describe them on one page only.

“He feels that a goal and its performance standard—what needs to be done and by what due date—should take no more than a paragraph or two to express, so it can be read and reviewed in about a minute.”- Teresa Lee

Lesson

Have a goal and write it down and what needs to be done with a due date X and Y by when kind of frame of reference with a paragraph or two to express, so you can review it within a minute. Then exceed your monthly goals and be on point for your goals. But make sure they are manageable daily.

“Once we’ve written the goals out concisely, it’s easy to look at them often and stay focused on what’s important.”- Teresa Lee

Lesson

Look at your goals often and print them out if needs be. Do not start something without an end goal in mind. How many words? How many chapters? What style of writing do you want to write them in? What is the stopping point for your work? Will it be a series or a standalone novel? How often will you publish? Do you want to write the story out first and then post or write and post once you have a large enough backlog? How large is too large of a backlog? How small is too small of a backlog? How do you want people to access your work and in what formats? You need to know all of this before taking on a new novel. Preferably draft it out in notes and in outline format. Each story is unique. Remember that. So make it your own work of art.

“Finally, I e-mail my goals to him and keep copies, so everything is clear and we can both periodically check my progress.”- Teresa Lee

Lesson

Write your goals and email them to yourself and then periodically check on your progress. This is important. Do it weekly, every Tuesday. Then start again. Then formulate another set of goals every twenty-nine days.

“If you have a one-page description for every goal, wouldn’t there be a lot of pages for each person?” - Teresa Lee

“No, there really aren’t. We believe in the 80/20 rule. That is, 80% of your really important results will come from 20% of your goals. So we set One Minute Goals on only that 20%—that is, our key areas of responsibility —maybe three to five goals. Of course, in the event a special project comes up, we set special One Minute Goals.” - Teresa Lee

Lesson

No more than three to five goals per month. Break it down by week and day.

She continued, “Since each goal can be read in about a minute, we are encouraged to take a moment every now and then to look at what we’re doing and see if it matches our goals.”- Teresa Lee “

Lesson

Look at each goal and see how much you can get done and by when.

‘Teresa,’ he said, ‘one of your goals for the future is for you to identify and solve your own problems. But since you are new, let’s talk. So tell me what the problem is.’ - The Manager

Lesson

Identify and solve your own problems in writing and in therapy. Do not let people solve them for you. Figure out the solution to your problems. Especially what you want and do not want in your life. People wise. Relationship wise. Time wise. Productivity wise.

“‘If you can’t tell me what you’d like to be happening,’ he said, ‘you don’t have a problem yet. You’re just complaining. A problem only exists if there is a difference between what is actually happening and what you desire to be happening.’ - The Manager

Lesson

I like this point. It taught me that a problem without a solution is just a complaint. So, stop complaining about your family and do something about it.

Praise people as soon as possible.

Lesson

Praise people when they do a great job. Encourage them to do better and uplift them if they are down.

Let people know what they did right—be specific.

Lesson

Such as when someone does well in singing or writing. Compliment them by leaving a review on your blog and link back to the original work.

Tell people how good you feel about what they did right, and how it helps.

Lesson

Also ask what you can do to serve them in the relationship and what you can do better.

Make it clear you have confidence in them and support their success.

Lesson

I tell my parents this every day. Even if they do not agree with me. I support them fully. My aunt as well. Especially my half-brother and older full sister. We may not talk as much as others would like. But they know I support them wholeheartedly and am praying for them and cheering them on through Scripture verses daily. The power of communication for me is through Scripture and uplifting words written down in a message for my loved ones or a book that I delight in that I want to share with those I treasure. Like my soulmate. I treasure her for her honesty and her love for me. And her ability to be kind yet firm and nonjudgmental at the same time without trying to insult me. Which I greatly appreciate!

The Best

Minute

I Spend

Is The One

I Invest

In People

Lesson

I invest in my relationships as much as possible. No matter what. They matter. I would not be where I am today without my support system from a myriad of areas in my life. It helps. Yes, I may feel alone now. But if I look at the wisdom my relationships with people have given me in the past, I realise I am loved and blessed and highly favored to have them in my life at that point to get me through that difficulty and made me stronger, wiser, healthier, and more of a fighter for them and for myself. I keep going in life because I believe that I have to share the wisdom that I have learned and because I do not want anyone to tell me I am a loser or less than anymore. I want to show that I am worth something to someone. That. I matter.

Everyone

Is A Potential Winner.

Some People

Are Disguised

As Losers.

Don’t Let

Their Appearances

Fool You.

Lesson

Ah! Yes! A former acquaintance said I was a loser. But God knew I was a winner. It took three separate people and three separate relationships for them to tell me I wasn’t worthless or a loser. It helped a lot and now I have better self-confidence in myself in spite of all that life has thrown at me. I am stronger. I do not take negative words at face value anymore. I love my own life and I love my mentors and even those I treasure the most because they gave me a renewed purpose and mission in life. To speak up for those struggling mentally or the less than or those not valued by others. To show people that they are worthy of love and favor and kindness. And that everything will be okay mentally and emotionally no matter what. To just keep fighting and do not give up.

“You see,” the Manager said, “you really have three choices as a manager. First, you can hire winners. They are hard to find, and they cost money. Or, second, if you can’t find a winner, you can hire someone with the potential to be a winner. Then you systematically help that person become a winner.”

Lesson

God loves me as I am, and He sees me as a Winner in Messiah. I look to the spiritual realm for sustenance and assurance in my faith and not in man. I love God and I love my walk with Him. Friends may leave or fall out of contact. But the wisdom that God places on their heart to share with me is what makes them a winner in my eyes. And that matters a lot to me (and hopefully to God!).

Take a Minute To
Look At Your Goals.

Then Look At What
You’re Doing

And See If It Matches
Your Goals.

Lesson

This is why I limited my Internet usage to three things and kept it at those three things. I have no interest in anything else at this point on my journey in my life. My life is full enough! And I am enjoying living my own life privately away from the Internet and focusing more fully on my passions and little joys in life. So far I am pushing ahead with those three things, and it is going well!

We Are Not Just
Our Behavior.

We Are The Person
Managing
Our Behavior.

Lesson

This is important. I must manage my behavior by managing my attitude. I created a list of rules for myself to follow and so far, it is going well. I am learning as I am near my thirties that make as many financial decisions as possible now in error so that when you hit your cap of financial mistake age then you are all set. I am happy with that rule and so far, I am learning what I do not like to eat and what I do like to eat. The drinking part may take a while as I figure out what my body needs at whatever point in time.

But I am blessed and happy and joyful about life and it only took a few minutes to write out my rules to realise why. Thank you for reading. ( )

Really short to read. Found it boring, predictable. A bit tedious and not believable. A simple story.
But the small quotes throughout book were worthwhile...ie: "People who feel good about themselves produce good results." ( )
