If you want to understand what the classical deism of the American revolution means, read this book.If you want to understand why we have a a first amendment specifying separation of church and state, read this book. Jefferson was a complex character, but was, above all else, an independent and fearless thinker. To quote JFK's remarks at a dinner for Nobel laureates at the White House in 1962: "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." Five stars. No doubts. I actually read this online. It was a quick read, too. Probably the best review of the intent of this book would be this prayer from the UUA site.
A lovely addition to thoroughgoing Americana collections. Gehört zu VerlagsreihenIst enthalten in
In the early nineteenth century, Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, conceived the idea of extracting a gospel purified of what he saw as extraneous philosophical, mythological, and theological elements. To do so, he took verses from the four canonical gospels and arranged them into a single narrative, focusing on the actual words of Jesus. This work was never published during Jefferson's lifetime but was inherited by his grandson and printed for the first time in the early twentieth century. The original bound manuscript, popularly referred to as The Jefferson Bible, is held by the United States National Museum in Washington. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

All while everything we know of the Man who created the original, which this book is based on, tells us that the Man was in no way whatsoever an ascriber to Religion, period!
Though while we can not state, and should neither claim, nor assert that the man ascribed at all to any sort of Spirituality.....
.....one should find it difficult to not feel that per the facts of the man's life, leaves one wanting to believe that he was a Spiritual person.
I however, will not use the LibraryThing genre: "Religion & Spirituality", to classify my copy of this book. - Simply because our American Founding Fathers, did not discuss Spirituality. Most likely, their reason was because of just how personal Spirituality truely IS.
At the same time, any person of more than the most base, most rudimentary intellect pays attention to the United States Constitution, and its Amendments, will know, very well, the American Founding Fathers wrote into the Foundational LAWs of the United States, that Religion be all but totally illegal! further that for what minuscule ways in which Religion is legal in the United States, such ascription MUST, in all ways, be kept in the most extreme, personal and private!
